AIM Roads is a newly Canadian established subsidiary division of Global Acciona Road Maintenance group. With the main focus on road seasonal maintenance and road, bridge infrastructure.
Under direct reporting to the AIM Fleet Manager and functional reporting to the Project Director and Contract Manager, the Mechanic Superintendent will be responsible for providing support to the Excluded management team, and the Union mechanics team. This position will provide leadership and oversee all coordination and operations of day-to-day maintenance related work with the mechanics and all heavy duty Truck and Road maintenance equipment work.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for keeping the equipment according to the company policies and regulations.
  • Analyze the fleet and make suggestions for improvements or purchases.
  • Assume responsibility for the approval for Orders and Invoices, as per the procedures established by AIM roads, of any repairs on the company’s equipment that must be performed by subcontractors.
  • Develop and administer the budget for maintenance and replacement of the equipment.
  • Supervise and direct the members of the maintenance team.
  • Implement and follow the schedule of preventive maintenance and annual inspections.
  • Complete weekly reports.
  • Establish various management tools to improve cost management.
  • Ensure the training of the staff.
  • Responsible for coordinating all equipment planning and acquisition activities with the contract management and procurement teams.
  • Responsible for receiving all new equipment onsite & managing short-term equipment rentals, ensuring that the vendor/supplier meets all requisites.
  • Effectively schedule, troubleshoot, and diagnose machine problems and maximize utilization of staff and equipment by effectively scheduling, planning and assigning work.
  • Monitoring of equipment utilization and maintenance reports produced from electronic systems as required by AIM Roads.
  • Reporting of vital information regarding equipment costs to contract management, such as those mentioned above, both on paper and directly to contract management.
  • Analysis of equipment costs relating to budget and critical decision making for purchase vs. rent of equipment.
  • Build and maintain and environment characterized by high productivity and morale and developing people through training, coaching, etc.
  • Supervise and direct the members of the maintenance team (foreman, warehouse, mechanics / technicians, administrative support).
  • Implementation and supervise correct usage of mechanical works tracking systems and software as decided and directed by the company.
  • Perform other related duties.

Required Skills and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent technical, communication, organizational, coordination and planning skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines.
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.
  • Strong ability to plan, schedule, deliver and report a variety of complex tasks.
  • Excellent stakeholder relationship building skills.
  • Previous experience in managing equipment fleet, vendor contact, dealings, purchasing, and rental of equipment & materials for equipment maintenance, servicing, and repair.
  • Mechanical background - understanding of mechanics of heavy equipment, including Excavators, Dozers, Loaders, Graders, Rollers/Compactors, Backhoes, Cranes, Hydraulic, Crawler, and Tower.
  • Understanding of mechanics of on road heavy equipment: Truck tractor and trailer; Winter Maintenance Equipment, Lowboy trailers, Dump Trucks, Water Trucks, Sweeper/Vacuum Trucks and other large on road truck types.
  • Ability to manage multiple personnel over multiple worksites including: Mechanics, Equipment Support Engineer, Truck Drivers & Clerk.
  • Understanding of electronic systems and computer programs/software to monitor fleet for Hours, Service, Utilization, Fuel usage, Fleet tracking.
  • Knowledge of equipment market and value of equipment for purposes of buy/sell analysis, rent vs. purchase, and sale of owned equipment at project closeout.
  • Experience in heavy equipment repairs and or management of heavy equipment repairs and staff is a must.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements in Canada including managing unionized employees.

Experience and Qualifications

  • University year degree or global equivalent in applicable field of study.
  • Ten years of work-related experience or a combination of education and directly related experience equal to fifteen (15) years if non-degree.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in connection with the management of heavy vehicle fleet.
  • Experience in equipment fleet planning and acquisition activities.
  • Experience in equipment maintenance planning, tracking and execution.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word)
  • Training and experience in change management and facilitation skills.
  • Proven ability to mentor and manage a team of more 4+ members
  • Experience managing strategic fleet management vendors preferred
  • Experience working with Union Mechanics.
