Position Overview
The Senior Director of Service and Learning leads the Learning and Development team at City Year Miami and is the driver of the AmeriCorps Volunteers journey from confirmation through alumnihood.
The Senior Director of Service and Learning is responsible for the continuous improvement of the City Year Miami’s learning strategy and leads implementation of an annual training and development plan for City Year Miami AmeriCorps Volunteers (ACVs), to deliver high-quality service and interventions in our schools.
Job Description
Engage and Onboard Confirmed AmeriCorps Volunteers
Serve as City Year Miami’s Onboarding and Corps HR Point, supporting incoming AmeriCorps Volunteers as they transition to the program.
- Develop strategy for site wide communication with confirmed volunteers prior to their official start date
- Plan and execute training and information sessions to prepare incoming volunteers for their year of service
- Curate asynchronous content for incoming volunteers that provides insight into the work they will be doing at school sites
- Lead on the planning and execution of AmeriCorps Volunteers Registration, ensuring all required tasks are completed by the identified deadlines and that all necessary stakeholders are engaged in the process
- Support the AmeriCorps Volunteers school placement process by collecting necessary information during the onboarding process
- Collaborate regularly with the City Year Recruitment and Admissions team around confirmed volunteers and their engagement, experience, and requirements
Create and Implement AmeriCorps Volunteers Learning Plan
In partnership with the Executive Director, develop a site learning plan in collaboration with City Year Headquarters Learning and Development and the broader Impact Team (ICs, L&D, IDs). Lead the planning, execution, resourcing and logistics of learning for the site, including:
- Develop and oversee the management of a calendar that aligns with site operational and learning priorities as established by the learning team and Impact Directors (IDs) with input/support from Impact Managers (IMs).
- With site Impact team plan and lead execution of Summer Learning Institute and other special learning events including Mid-Year Summit, Spring Break Retreat, and L&D Training Days.
- Coordinate learning and development for Senior and Second Year ACMs, two cohorts of ACMs returning for a second year of service.
- Identify, build, and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the Miami area who will support the Learning and Development program and provide high-quality learning and trainings to our AmeriCorps Volunteers.
- Seek out resources and training aligned to the future direction of City Year Miami as it relates to ACV learning and development and innovations to service implementation.
- Supervise Learning and Development Team in executing training-related logistics, including supply and equipment requirements, event set-up and break-down, contract execution and payments, management of department purchase card, and more.
Drive Content Development and Facilitation
Establish content management process (i.e., creation, publication, version control, access, and content maintenance) that will position City Year Miami staff to lead meaningful training experiences for AmeriCorps Volunteers
- Execute high-quality learning content development and delivery
- Ensure adequate resources (i.e., internal and external experts, time, space) to support high quality content development and delivery.
- Secure and coordinate internal and external content experts as learning designers and facilitators. Includes leading IMs and ICs in content design/facilitation of corps L&D.
- Customize HQ content and produce locally designed content as needed to meet learning needs.
- Train and develop staff to lead and facilitate meaningful
- Support IMs and ICs in identifying team-specific learning needs and managing customized learning opportunities.
- Prepare internal and external facilitators.
- Evaluate L&D program on an on-going basis to ensure that it meets the needs of ACVs, partners, and Program staff.
- Collaborate with City Year’s national network of L&D professionals to share best practices and continue to develop the L&D program
- Encourage and lead feedback loop focused on staff development and facilitation of learning and development content to offer insights about the team’s effectiveness and support continuous improvement for future training and development spaces.
- Serve as primary liaison to Miami-Dade County Public schools regarding services and ACV development, communicating directly with Instructional Supervisors and Curriculum Support Specialists as necessary.
Oversee Coaching of WSWC Implementation
In partnership with Impact Directors, ensure high quality implementation of WSWC services and improvement plans and that ACMs are regularly receiving effective feedback and guidance through implementation of Observation and Coaching practice.
- Lead processes to provide feedback and insight to IMs and learning team on learning needs in the areas of ACV practice with students, leveraging instructional expertise of Impact Coaches throughout the process.
- Lead and support content design and delivery of training to meet site learning needs for effective academic and socio-emotional learning services.
- Reinforce use of data to adjust interventions and improve instructional practice.
Support a Meaningful AmeriCorps Volunteers Experience
Create structures and experiences that will result in a positive and fulfilling experience for AmeriCorps Volunteers grounded in service to the students and community of Miami.
- Lead on the building of community and positive corps culture by setting a theme for the service year and ensuring ongoing community building strategies align with chosen theme.
- Ensure ACVs feel prepared for service because of their training, specifically as they head to schools following Summer Learning Institute.
- Create vision and direction for all training spaces that prioritize ACV experience in said spaces.
- Set expectations for facilitation and team leadership that will result in positive ACV experience, creating structures and processes to support expectations in being met.
Volunteer Florida / AmeriCorps Partnership Management
- Serve as the primary liaison with Volunteer Florida (Serve Florida) to ensure compliance with all AmeriCorps grant requirements, policies, and performance expectations.
- Develop and maintain a strong, collaborative relationship with Volunteer Florida staff, ensuring timely communication and responsiveness to requests.
- Monitor program implementation to ensure alignment with Volunteer Florida, AmeriCorps, and City Year policies, procedures, and performance measures.
- Oversee the timely collection, review, and submission of all required programmatic data, reports, and documentation to Volunteer Florida, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with grant requirements.
- Partner with the Operations and Data teams to maintain data integrity, monitor key performance indicators, and prepare reports for Volunteer Florida and other stakeholders.
- Ensure all program documentation, volunteers’ files, and compliance records meet state and federal AmeriCorps standards and are audit ready.
- Coordinate and support Volunteer Florida site visits, monitor activities, and program audits, addressing findings and implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Stay informed of changes to Volunteer Florida and AmeriCorps regulations and communicate updates to site leadership and program staff.
Lead Transition of AmeriCorps Volunteers to Life After City Year and Alumnihood
Build a comprehensive program designed to support AmeriCorps Volunteers in building the hard and soft skills needed for their transition into Life After City Year (LACY).
- Ensure all AmeriCorps Volunteers meet City Year Miami’s Graduation requirements and complete all necessary requirements, leveraging support from Impact Managers and Impact Directors
- Oversee the creation of a LACY Calendar offering meaningful learning experiences for AmeriCorps Volunteers throughout the year
- Plan and execute a Spring Break Retreat primarily focused on preparing the ACDs for Life After City Year
- Consistently gather insights into AmeriCorps Volunteers’ interests and career goals to inform the LACY content being offered
- Build and manage key community partnerships and relationships that can support the LACY training and development of AmeriCorps Volunteers
Oversee Returning and Confirmed AmeriCorps Volunteers Engagement
Lead and manager ongoing engagement of Returning and Confirmed AmeriCorps Volunteers
- Drive vision and strategy for site’s approach to recruitment of AmeriCorps Volunteers to return to City Year Miami.
- Coordinate interviews for AmeriCorps Volunteers for Second Year AmeriCorps Volunteers and Team Leader.
- Collaborate with Regional Admissions and Recruitment Department (RAD) to identify and streamline communication to confirmed incoming AmeriCorps Volunteers
- Manage and coordinate confirmed AmeriCorps Volunteer engagement strategies and events during the spring and summer leading into their service year.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Background in education and/or youth development and management, preferably within Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience leading, managing, and training staff or young adults in the education, nonprofit, or corporate sector.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proven ability to communicate complex topics and parse them for specific audiences.
- Demonstrated skill in breaking down large concepts into teachable bits that others can internalize easily.
- Thrives in diverse, youthful, high energy, entrepreneurial, and fast-changing environment.
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends for events and community service projects.
