As part of our mission to foster a safe and sustainable research environment, we are looking for a Biosafety Professional  to join our dynamic Safety and Health team.

In this role, you will play a vital part in advancing the University's biosafety and other safety & health programmes by supporting faculty, researchers, and students in achieving regulatory compliance and operational excellence. You will also contribute to strategic safety initiatives across laboratories and research facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the implementation and continuous improvement of the University’s Biosafety & Biosecurity Programme in alignment with institutional objectives and national regulations.

  • Manage the operations of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), including project reviews, risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with relevant biosafety regulations (e.g., BATA).

  • Provide expert guidance on the safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal of biological agents, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and biological toxins.

  • Lead or co-ordinate investigations of biosafety-related incidents, such as exposure events, spills, and needle stick injuries, and recommend corrective actions.

  • Submit relevant regulatory reports to agencies such as MOH, NEA, and SCDF.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to prepare for audits and inspections by national agencies.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain enterprise level biosafety-related documents in accordance with NTU’s institutional safety framework and regulatory requirements.

  • Review risk assessments and publish targeted safety advisory service to research centres, departments, and laboratories, supporting effective risk controls and safe research practices.

  • Lead or support the development and implementation of enterprise level training and competency programmes to build biosafety awareness across NTU units.

  • Mentor and support Safety & Health Coordinators and other key personnel in departments on biosafety related regulations and standards.

  • Champion cross-functional biosafety and biosecurity initiatives in partnership with faculty, researchers, and administrators.

  • Monitor compliance trends, analyse safety performance indicators, and recommend improvements to enhance the university’s overall biosafety and biosecurity performance.

Requirements

  • A degree in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering (Bioengineering or Biotechnology) or Public Health.

  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in research safety, biosafety, and safety and health management, preferably at the institutional or corporate level.

  • Strong knowledge of local & international biological safety related regulations & guidelines (e.g., Biological Agents and Toxins Act) and local workplace safety and health regulations.

  • Prior experience in supporting workplace safety programmes for laboratory and research organisations.

  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in technical writing and presentation.

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to engage stakeholders across different levels.

  • Good project management skills.

  • Strong expertise in data analytics and digital literacy

  • Able to manage multiple tasks effectively and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance compliance mindset among stakeholders.

Preferred Attributes and Experience:

  • Hands-on experience in life science research for 3 or more years.

  • Professional certifications such as Registered Biosafety Professional with ABSA, Workplace Safety & Health Officer (MOM), or ISO 45001 Lead Auditor.

  • Experience in conducting safety and biosafety audits, especially in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories.

  • Prior experience in conducting research in health and safety topics.

  • Programming or AI skills to support digitalization of biosafety related compliance processes.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities in leading project teams or workgroups.
