Job Summary

Performs high quality echocardiograms according to the IAC approved protocol and accurately completes reports in the pediatric outpatient and inpatient echocardiography lab, and at multiple satellite clinics. Teaches theory, instrumentation and interpretation to sonographers, fellows and visitors. Assists the staff physicians and fellows in research projects and data entry as required. Attends internal/departmental meetings.

                         

Job Details

Responsibilities:

  • Perform echocardiograms in accordance with lab standards and expectations.  Responds to emergent exams is a timely manner.  Follows department workflows for reporting, and standard daily performance.
  • Independently reviews patient history and accurately records test results.
  • Ensures patient care is provided in clean, safe, quiet, and secure environment. Renders excellent patient care to patients and families.  All hospital related interactions are courteous and confidential and in accordance with HIPPAA regulations. Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to deliver developmental and age-appropriate care to patients.
  • Maintains a clean work environment according to OSHA, JCAHO, and Cleveland Clinic policies and procedures.
  • If not proficient in fetal echocardiography, will train and become proficient in fetal echocardiography.
  • Participates in lab meetings, research studies, and quality assurance activities.  Cooperates and assists in obtaining institutional, divisional and departmental initiatives and goals.
  • Assists in the teaching of students, fellows and new technicians.
  • Follows the policies, procedures and cost-control standards of the Pediatric Institute and The Cleveland Clinic Enterprise as well as Pediatric Cardiology specific policies and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable in various other techniques used in echocardiography.
  • Contributes to development of standard operating procedures.
  • Assists the staff physicians and fellows in research projects and data entry.
  • Teaches theory, instrumentation and interpretation to sonographers, fellows and visitors.
  • Attends internal/departmental meetings to support educational growth and awareness.
  • Interacts with ultrasound vendors to evaluate new and prototype software and equipment.
  • Provides direct feedback and participates in evaluation and development of products.
  • Ensures equipment is operational and troubleshoots problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Graduate of a cardiac ultrasound program (minimum of 18 month program).

Certifications:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Within two years from hire date, new hires must obtain Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography in Pediatric Echo (RDCS-PE) from The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) from Cardiac Credentialing International.  Certifications required.

Complexity of Work:

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of m-mode, 2D and Doppler calculations, cardiac hemodynamics, and normal and complex cardiac anatomy.

Work Experience:

  • Two years full-time pediatric echo experience, or two years adult echo experience preferred.
  • Fetal echo experience or OB ultrasound experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to push and maneuver 500-pound equipment and motor coordination to operate equipment.
  • A high degree of dexterity to produce materials on a PC, normal or corrected vision to normal range, extensive sitting and frequent walking, occasional lifting or carrying 5 to 15 pounds.
  • Must have reliable, independent transportation.
  • Must be able to drive to locations within an hour when on call.
