GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Executive Director of Radiology/Imaging with accountability to the Manager and under the direction of a Radiologist, receives and prepares patients and operates computerized, non-invasive scanning equipment to provide computerized tomography (CT) radiographic scans for radiologists and physicians to diagnose patients' injuries and/or study body systems.
REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS:
Prepares patient for procedures; instructs patient concerning examination; positions patient according to procedure protocol; applies immobilization devices as needed.
Explains examination procedure to the patient and responds to patient’s questions. Utilizes and promotes NCH CARES concepts/behaviors in all customer interactions.
Obtains and provides clinical information and patient history to Radiologist for all patient procedures.
Administers radiographic contrast media by intravenous injection according to infection control/universal precautions guidelines; administers enteric contrast media as required.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, treat, and care for all age groups of patients (neonatal through geriatric); implements assessment/treatment/care based on the developmental stages of the patient. Involves family/guardian in plan of care and conducts patient and family education, as appropriate, considering the developmental needs of the patient.
Operates CT scanner in a manner that provides Radiologist with optimum quality images. Communicates Radiologists preliminary interpretation to appropriate individuals as applicable.
Schedules patients and works at the reception station when needed.
Retrieves medications that are not controlled substances.
Maintains order and sanitary conditions of work environment in accordance with hospital standards. Checks operating condition of equipment, ensures cleanliness of exam rooms, stocks and maintains supplies, etc. Supervises the activities of students assigned to the work area; assists in training and evaluation.
Assumes responsibility for own professional growth by attending Continuing Education classes, seminars, and by reading professional journals.
Adheres to departmental and hospital safety standards in order to maintain a safe patient care and/or working environment; attends all mandatory safety inservice education programs.
Performs on-call duties as scheduled.
Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients who may be anxious or confused and to interact with physicians and other hospital staff.
The analytical ability to determine proper patient positioning and scanning parameters based on suspected pathology, patient size and age, and other controlling factors.
The written and verbal communication skills necessary to document patient procedures, inform patients regarding procedures, and communicate radiologists’ interpretation.
The ability to maintain a flexible work schedule and fulfill on-call responsibilities.
KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE/REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
Graduate of an accredited school in Radiologic Technology.
ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification in CT and current ARRT registration or NMTCB(CT), Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board certification in C.T
Current Illinois Emergency Management Agency license.
Knowledge of and/or experience in the correct use of body mechanics.
Current CPR certification.
