Job Description Summary

Organization Summary Statement
Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration serves as the College's chief financial and human resources officer and is a key member of the Dean's senior leadership team. The Assistant Dean provides executive leadership for the College's financial, human resources, research administration, and administrative operations, ensuring these functions are effective, responsive, and aligned with the College's mission of teaching, research, and service. Working closely with the Dean and College leadership, the Assistant Dean develops and implements short- and long-term strategic priorities, oversees financial planning and resource management, and ensures responsible stewardship of College resources. Serving as the College Budget Officer and HR Partner, the Assistant Dean represents the College in university-wide committees and strategic initiatives, collaborates with campus leaders to advance institutional priorities, and ensures compliance with university policies, University System policies, contractual obligations, and applicable federal and state regulations while promoting operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.


Experience: Twelve (12) years of professional experience in financial planning, budget management, or academic administrative operations. Six (6) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff. 


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of organizational and unit performance measures.

Knowledge of the impact and implications of decisions on leadership objectives.

Skill in oral and written communication.

Skill in data analytics and negotiation.

Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.

Ability to research information and analyze complex data and information to create reports and presentations.

Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.

Ability to develop and administer new policies and procedures.

Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Additional Job Details

Preferences:

  • Experience with UMD administrative systems, including Workday, Adaptive, KR, and Concur
  • Experience overseeing departmental, institutional, or organizational budgets, particularly in large or multi-unit organizations
  • Proven ability to lead professional staff, foster collaboration, and promote an ethical, service-oriented team culture
  • Sponsored research experience
  • Knowledge of University and State financial policies, procedures, and practices preferred
