The Pathology Tech Sr. serves as role model and subject matter expert for all laboratory processes and procedures, including the following:
Serve as role model and subject matter expert for the pre-analytic area of the laboratory processes and procedures. Monitor the workflow of pre-analytical specimen manipulation/preparation. Instruct and train employees in all required pre-analytical elements. Assist in staff development and provides coverage to enhance workflow. Act as the pre-analytical resource for the laboratory.

Where applicable: perform CLIA Waived Lab Testing, assist providers/nurses in the patients’ room with bone marrow collections, process/make smears, perform iron stains (QC), train new hires/students/ path residents, ship dangerous goods, order and prepare samples for send-out testing to reference lab, coordinate and prepare samples to be sent to the anatomic pathology laboratory, assist with morgue duties and descendant affairs; assist with oversite of the digital imaging slide area, assist in the Pathology Client Service Call Center with calling, contacting and documenting critical lab results to providers; provide customer service in response to inquiries related to, but not limited to, patient information, test results, phlebotomy services, courier services and various problems and special requests; assist with data collection and data entry. Process laboratory specimen according to SOP (standard operating procedure). Monitor inventory of supplies and communicates with the section supervisor. Perform duties of Pathology Tech as necessary, and complete other duties as assigned.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Shipping of Dangerous Goods Certificate from the VCU Office of Environmental Health & Safety (offered quarterly).
Certification must be obtained in the first quarter or the closest available scheduled class after date of hire into this position

Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience with laboratory principles and procedures,
Clinical Trials and Outreach protocol and handling specimens
Previous experience using a personal computer, entering data and work experience with Cerner

Experience PREFERRED: N/A

Education/training REQUIRED:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Education/training PREFERRED:
One year of post High School education in a Health Science field

Additional position requirements:
Rotating weekends, averaging 2 weekend per month

Holiday scheduling, as required
