Description:

The Media Relations and Strategic Communications (MRSC) team at Arizona State University is seeking an experienced social media communicator to help develop content for important university initiatives and to build and scale the social media presence of key university officials.

Reporting to the social media manager, this role will collaborate closely with colleagues across MRSC and the Enterprise Brand Strategy and Management teams.

This position sits at the intersection of communications, social strategy, thought leadership and digital community building. The person in this role will shape how ASU programs and prominent personalities are leveraged across social platforms, developing content and strategies that grow visibility, strengthen credibility and expand engagement with key audiences.

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in executive communications and social media strategy, with the ability to capture and maintain authentic individual voices. They will partner closely with senior stakeholders to translate complex ideas and subject-matter expertise into clear, compelling content that resonates across digital channels.

They should also have hands-on experience working with influencers and external digital creators, ideally identifying and pitching executive leaders and university experts to engage new and relevant online communities. This includes recognizing where strategic partnerships can extend reach, build trust and position ASU voices within broader conversations happening across social and digital platforms.

Success in this role requires sound judgment, strong editorial instincts and an understanding of how executive storytelling, audience engagement and influencer collaboration can work together to support broader communications goals.

This role requires a self-starter who enjoys structure, takes initiative, and can operate with minimal micromanagement. You should be comfortable owning tasks end-to-end, documenting progress, and communicating clearly across teams.

Essential duties:

  • Partner with the social media manager to develop and execute executive communications strategies across digital channels in alignment with brand objectives.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for executive social media initiatives, ensuring seamless coordination with executive stakeholders and internal teams.

  • Meet with executives and key partners to translate ideas and expertise into concise, compelling social media narratives.

  • Ghostwrite and publish social content for executive leadership, maintaining authentic individual voices while supporting broader university goals.

  • Identify and help execute influencer and creator partnership opportunities that position executive leaders and university experts in front of relevant digital communities.

  • Support end-to-end execution of influencer programs, including partner identification, outreach, coordination, campaign guidance, building credibility and performance tracking.

  • Monitor content performance and audience engagement, using insights to optimize strategy and strengthen voice, reach and influence.

  • Track emerging trends, competitor activity and relevant conversations to uncover strategic opportunities across executive content and influencer engagement.

  • Oversee audience engagement strategies across executive social media platforms.

Additional shared duties will include:

  • Provide backup support to the MRSC social team as needed.

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines with strong attention to detail, follow-through and proactive problem-solving.

  • Maintain familiarity with ASU brand standards and ensure content remains aligned with institutional guidelines.

  • Monitor platform updates, emerging features and shifts in social media behavior and recommend strategy adjustments accordingly.

  • Help develop ideas and tactics to drive strong engagement across social platforms.

  • Apply current social media best practices, including accessibility standards, to content planning and execution.

  • Identify opportunities to repurpose evergreen content across platforms to extend reach and enhance audience value.

  • Use Airtable (PMS) daily to track deliverables, manage workflow and support cross-functional coordination.

  • Support live event coverage as needed.

  • Participate actively in weekly planning meetings and team discussions.

What success looks like in 90 days

  • Independently manage weekly executive social media planning, content development, scheduling and publishing with minimal oversight.

  • Maintain Airtable or other tracking systems with clear, consistent visibility into deliverables, deadlines, ownership and next steps.

  • Build effective working relationships with executive stakeholders and translate conversations, ideas and expertise into strong social content.

  • Monitor community engagement consistently, respond appropriately and escalate issues with sound judgment.

  • Produce clear, compelling and brand-aligned copy with minimal revisions, while successfully adapting tone and voice across leaders, platforms and audiences.

  • Demonstrate the ability to preserve authentic executive voices while advancing broader communications and brand objectives.

  • Begin identifying, supporting and helping manage influencer or creator opportunities that extend the reach of executive leaders and ASU experts into new digital communities.

  • Recognize and act on opportunities to repurpose evergreen content strategically across channels.

  • Effectively balance multiple priorities, contribute to team workflows and provide support to broader social media efforts as needed.

Desired qualifications:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience developing social media strategy, digital communications, executive communications, public relations, journalism or a related communications field preferred.

  • Degree in marketing, journalism, public relations preferred

  • Experience developing social media strategies for executive leaders, public figures, subject-matter experts or prominent organizational voices.

  • Strong copywriting and ghostwriting skills, with the ability to adapt tone and voice across leaders, platforms and audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex ideas, research or institutional priorities into clear, engaging social media content.

  • Experience working directly with senior stakeholders, executives or high-profile partners.

  • Hands-on experience identifying, coordinating or supporting influencer, creator or external digital partnership opportunities.

  • Strong editorial judgment, including the ability to assess tone, timing, accuracy, audience relevance and reputational risk.

  • Experience monitoring social media performance and using insights to optimize content strategy and audience engagement.

  • Experience managing social media content calendars, publishing workflows and multi-platform campaigns.

  • Familiarity with social media accessibility standards, platform trends and emerging digital behaviors.

  • Experience using project management or content planning tools such as Airtable, Hootsuite or similar platforms.

  • Experience supporting live event coverage or real-time social media content.

  • Portfolio demonstrating social media writing, executive communications, campaign strategy or digital storytelling work.
