Manager, Quality Management AML Compliance – Sydney, Australia
The AML/CTF Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing the Quality Assurance (QA) Framework across the organization's Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) program.
The role provides independent oversight and challenges of AML operational activities to ensure compliance with regulatory obligations, internal policies, risk appetites, and industry best practices.
The position may lead a team of QA professionals and acts as a key subject matter expert in financial crime compliance. The role is accountable for assessing the effectiveness and quality of AML controls, identifying systemic issues, driving remediation activities, and providing independent assurance over AML operational decision-making.
The AML/CTF Quality Assurance Manager partners with Financial Crime Operations, Compliance, Risk, Audit, Legal, and business stakeholders to strengthen the organization's financial crime control environment and support positive regulatory outcomes.
Role Responsibilities:
Quality Assurance Leadership – Design, implement, and oversee the AML quality management framework to ensure adherence to internal policies, AUSTRAC obligations, and global compliance standards.
Monitoring & Testing – Lead regular quality reviews of AML processes, including customer due diligence (CDD/KYC), transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and suspicious matter reporting.
Issue Identification & Remediation – Identify control gaps or process weaknesses, develop remediation plans, and track resolution to completion.
Data-Driven Insights – Analyse QA results to identify trends, recurring issues, and opportunities for process optimisation, presenting findings to senior compliance leadership.
Stakeholder Collaboration – Partner with AML operations, investigations, and technology teams to embed quality standards and ensure consistent application across all business units.
Training & Capability Uplift – Develop and deliver targeted training to uplift AML knowledge and quality awareness across operational teams.
Regulatory Engagement Support – Prepare quality-related reporting and evidence for internal audits, regulatory reviews, and external assurance activities.
Continuous Improvement – Champion process enhancements, automation opportunities, and best practices to strengthen AML compliance effectiveness.
Team Leadership – Manage and mentor QA analysts, fostering a culture of accountability, precision, and continuous learning.
Risk Management – Proactively identify emerging AML risks and work with relevant teams to ensure controls remain robust and fit-for-purpose.
Role Requirements:
Education: A degree in commerce, business, law, finance, risk, compliance, or equivalent, with CA qualified or working towards CA (or equivalent).
Extensive AML/CTF Expertise – 7+ years’ experience in Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Terrorism Financing, or broader financial crime compliance within banking, fintech, or other regulated financial services.
Regulatory Knowledge – Deep understanding of AUSTRAC obligations, the AML/CTF Act, sanctions regimes, and relevant APRA/ASIC guidance, with the ability to interpret and apply them to operational processes.
Quality Management Experience – Proven track record in designing and executing quality assurance or quality control programs within a compliance or operational risk environment.
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills – Strong ability to analyse QA results, identify root causes, and recommend practical, risk-based solutions.
Stakeholder Influence – Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage with AML operations, investigations, technology teams, and senior leadership.
Audit & Assurance Familiarity – Experience preparing for and supporting internal audits, regulatory reviews, and external assurance activities.
Leadership Capability – Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor QA analysts or compliance professionals, fostering a culture of precision and accountability.
Process Improvement Mindset – Experience identifying and implementing process enhancements, automation opportunities, and best practices in compliance operations.
Technical Proficiency – Familiarity with AML systems and tools (e.g., Actimize, Oracle Mantas, or similar) and strong Excel/BI skills for reporting and analysis.
Professional Qualifications – Relevant certifications such as CAMS, ICA, or equivalent are highly regarded.
