Job Description Summary:

The Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Kansas Medical Center will serve as a Pediatric Intensivist with clinical responsibility for inpatient service in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU is a medically based unit with a 24/7 coverage model and provides comprehensive, evidence-based critical care to pediatric patients across KUMC campuses. The role includes the evaluation and management of critically ill children, co-management of complex pediatric patients in collaboration with multiple surgical and specialty teams, and active participation in multidisciplinary care to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

In addition, the Clinical Assistant Professor will play a key role in the education and supervision of residents and medical students embedded in the PICU, contributing to their clinical training and professional development. The faculty member is also expected to participate in departmental and divisional academic, quality improvement, and scholarly activities.

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Provide expert, patient-centered care for patients in the pediatric intensive care unit.
  • In house night rotation with equitable coverage between 4 pediatric intensivists.
  • Provide moderate and deep sedation services.
  • Coordinate pediatric critical care medicine with surgical teams and other units.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support ongoing clinical, educational and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Educate and mentor residents, fellows and medical students in inpatient care and related areas as well as in formal and informal group education formats.
  • Participate in departmental, division, and institutional meetings, seminars and committees.
  • Maintain required certifications, including PALS, and participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, research, and quality improvement initiatives aligned with the Department's mission.

Required Qualifications

Education: MD/DO from an accredited school.

The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Board eligible (BE)/Board Certified (BC) in Pediatrics. Current certification or actively participating in the examination process leading to certification in pediatric critical care medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. Candidates may obtain this certification after hire.
