Location: All AER office locations, Alberta will be considered.

Employment Type: Full Time – Permanent

Salary Range: T4, Level 6, $130,050 - $153,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity. This position may be eligible to receive a Northern Living allowance. Northern Living allowances are provided based on the location of the position and where an employee primarily works and resides.

Senior Compliance Auditor - Hybrid

The Opportunity­­

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Senior Compliance Auditor to join its talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Compliance branch (RC).  The Senior Compliance Auditor will work within the Compliance Verification team providing technical guidance and support to multiple operational areas. Lead and provide audit representation on enterprise projects, branch compliance initiatives, regulatory development and technical issues.  Act as a statutory decision maker on enforcement files. Share experience and knowledge, develop and improve internal audit processes, contribute to operational planning and the training and mentoring of staff.

As a member of the team, Senior Compliance Auditor is responsible to lead, coordinate and independently conduct audits to confirm compliance with regulatory requirements.  Facilitate and coordinate audit program development, target selection, the integration of new audit programs with existing programs and supporting prioritization, analysis and reporting of audit programs. Promote a positive, trustworthy, safe and respectful business culture and facilitate team building.

This role offers immersion into a multi-disciplinary team and will provide the successful candidate with exposure to varied specialties, including: pipelines, drilling waste, Water Act, mineral lease expiries, well integrity, resource compliance and inventory reduction.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Lead, coordinate and independently conduct complex audits on operations/activities within the AER’s jurisdiction. Prepare audit plans. Collect and analyze information from varied and numerous sources to determine compliance, resolve problems and make recommendations to improve regulatory compliance.  Delegated decision maker on enforcement files.

  • Support and provide representation on enterprise projects, provincial initiatives, assignments related to audits, enforcement, regulatory and technical issues.

  • Contribute to operational planning, including risk-based decision making, reporting of team activities, trends, emerging issues and identifying priorities within the program.  Set and develop standards for audit processes and documentation and act as a subject matter expert providing support to internal stakeholders, hearings and ADR sessions as required.

  • Coordinate, support & facilitate effective team discussions within area of expertise, to share/resolve technical, audit, process and clarify policy matters.  Assist and/or train and mentor other staff as needed.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Degree in engineering, environmental sciences, or other related fields.

  • 8-12 years of directly related experience in regulatory reviews, audit process implementation, compliance assurance or other related experience.

  • Excellent technical knowledge of regulatory requirements in multiple operational areas.

  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills, strong presentation skills, attention to detail and technical accuracy.

  • Ability to think strategically, identifies regulatory challenges and performance issues and develops options for resolving the issues.

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task and prioritize competing duties.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals possessing a wide range of skills.
