The Production Medical Underwriter plays a critical role in evaluating and pricing stop-loss and self-funded group medical plans for both new business and renewals. This position collaborates closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure accurate, competitive, and timely proposals while operating within underwriting guidelines and profitability targets.

*This position is location-flexible. Target locations are listed; additional locations may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Review incoming submissions for completeness and coordinate with brokers, TPAs, and internal partners to obtain necessary documentation for risk evaluation.
  • Upload, validate, and analyze data using underwriting platforms and AI tools.
  • Evaluate, price, and issue proposals for specific and aggregate stop-loss coverage.
  • Calculate renewal rates based on a thorough analysis of claims experience, demographics, industry, location, and other key risk indicators.
  • Communicate underwriting assumptions, rationale, and additional information needs clearly and professionally to producer channels and internal partners.
  • Participate in underwriting roundtables and work collaboratively with claims, policy, and other departments to identify risk drivers and refine pricing approaches.
  • Organize and prioritize a high-volume book of business while meeting quoting deadlines and adhering to internal authority levels.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of underwriting decisions, assumptions, and required sign-offs in accordance with audit and compliance standards.
  • Support broker and client strategy discussions by providing underwriting insights and defending quote positions when appropriate.
  • Contribute to process improvements, workflow enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives across the underwriting department.
  • Stay informed on stop-loss market trends, competitor behavior, and regulatory developments impacting self-funded health plans.

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage a high-volume workload and competing deadlines.
  • Proficiency with underwriting systems and Microsoft Office products; ability to adapt quickly to new platforms and tools.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex medical and financial concepts to non-underwriters.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated independent decision-making while understanding potential impacts and consequences.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with brokers, TPAs, and internal partners.
  • Professional writing and phone communication skills.
  • Commitment to accuracy, organization, and maintaining complete underwriting documentation.
  • Openness to new ways of thinking, ongoing learning, and continuous improvement.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent industry experience considered.
  • 3+ years of medical underwriting experience (self-funded or stop-loss strongly preferred).
  • Experience working with MGUs, TPAs, or carrier-side underwriting teams is a plus.
