What you'll do

  • The model builder’s day-to-day tasks revolve around both technical and collaborative work, ensuring that the models are functioning optimally, meeting business needs, and evolving with the organization’s changing requirements. The role requires a balance of analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to navigate both the technical and business side of model development and maintenance.

Model Maintenance & Updates

  • Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: Addressing user-reported issues or model bugs, ensuring data integrity, and resolving performance issues in the model.  Resolve issues related to data loads, calculations, or performance. When these issues arise, the model builder and IT teams will work together to troubleshoot, using logs, data tracking, and system analysis tools to identify the root cause of any problem.

  • Model Updates and Enhancements: Implementing changes based on business requirements, such as adding new modules, updating calculations, or adjusting dashboards and views

  • System Upgrades: Anaplan releases regular updates to its platform, adding new features and bug fixes. The model builder will work with IT to test these updates, ensure they are compatible with existing models, and manage the deployment schedule to minimize disruptions.

  • Data Integration: Ensuring the seamless integration of data sources into and out of the Anaplan models (Snowflake, Power BI, FSM) by collaborating with IT to plan the flow of data from source systems into Anaplan and ensure smooth connectivity with source systems.

  • Version Control: Managing model versions and ensuring proper governance for changes to models, including maintaining documentation for each version.

Model Design and Development

  • Building New Models: Designing and developing new models from scratch or based on predefined business requirements (such as budgeting, forecasting, rolling forecasts).

  • Process Automation: Automating processes to streamline tasks like data updates and model notifications.

  • Creating Dashboards & Reporting: Designing and building user-friendly dashboards, reports, and visualization views for stakeholders to track performance and analyze data.

Data Management

  • Data Loading & Mapping: Managing data loads from various sources (APIs, flat files) and ensuring the correct mapping and transformation of data into the model. Collaborate with IT to ensure that data sources are accurately mapped to Anaplan’s data structures. This includes discussions about data formats, transformation logic, and setting up automated data imports.

  • Data Quality Assurance: Ensuring data consistency, accuracy, and integrity within the model, often through data validation rules or data audits.

  • Time-based Modeling: Implementing time-based models (e.g., monthly/quarterly forecasting, annual planning) and ensuring proper handling of time periods in the Anaplan model.

  • Optimizing Model Efficiency: Identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks, ensuring the model runs efficiently even with large data sets by working with IT on optimizing model performance, particularly when scaling models for larger datasets.

  • Reducing Model Complexity: Reworking models to reduce complexity, streamline processes, and improve user experience.

User Access & Security Management

  • User Role Management: Work with IT to set up and manage user access levels, roles, and permissions to ensure appropriate levels of access to sensitive business data and authentication settings are in line with the OTPP’s governance policies.

  • Security and Compliance: Ensuring the model adheres to security policies and compliance standards, including managing audit logs and adhering to data privacy regulations.  Coordinate with IT to implement and maintain role-based security, encryption, data masking, and user access restrictions.

Documentation and Best Practices

  • Documentation of Models and Processes: Documenting model structure, business logic, data flows, and user guides for future reference and to ensure knowledge transfer within the team.

  • Creating and Enforcing Best Practices: Following and promoting Anaplan best practices for model design, development, and deployment to ensure consistency, scalability, and maintainability.

Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Model Testing: Conducting tests (unit testing, integration testing, etc.) before implementing new features, updates, or changes to ensure functionality and avoid disruptions.

  • User Acceptance Testing (UAT): Supporting users in validating new features and changes, ensuring the models meet business requirements before final deployment.

Continuous Improvement & Training

  • Learning & Development: Staying up to date with new features and functionalities of Anaplan, attending webinars or certification programs, and continuously improving your skills.

  • Feedback Loop: Collecting feedback from end-users and stakeholders (FP&A) to identify areas of improvement and work towards improving the user experience and model performance.
