Summary:

The Monitor Technician Extern, under the supervision of a Nurse Educator or Monitor Technician, performs telemetry monitoring and other related technical and clinical activities to support the Monitor Technician Team.

Responsibilities:

Provides complete and accurate handoff of all patient monitoring and events to oncoming shift.Identifies and corrects for artifacts.Attaches electrodes to patient’s bodies to record electrical impulses from the heart to perform continuous ECG Monitoring.Performs continual and simultaneous surveillance of multiple patient monitors.Reports abnormal heart rhythms and changes in patients’ telemetry monitoring to nursing staff, immediate supervisor or designated chain of command.Completes all required shift documentation and updating of patient’s records with all readings taken from the heart monitor or EKGs.Identifies arrhythmias, deviation in patients’ baseline, signs of patient deterioration, and intervenes to ensure patient safety.Activates emergency response or rapid response for lethal arrhythmia or cardiac arrest.

Additional Job Information:

Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking skills, effective communications skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Requires sitting for long period of time monitoring and interpreting patients’ cardiac rhythms. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Required Work Experience: No prior work experience required. Other Information: Monitor Tech Extern program successful completion required within 60 days post-graduation.
