What we want
The Registered Nurse II (PRN) provides as needed support and assistance for the Diabetes Education Program, to include education instructions, initial health assessments of class participants, and maintaining State Department of Health Records as required. This is a wage position established to accommodate a temporary organizational need. As such, Texas A&M Health does not guarantee any set number of hours or length of employment in this role.

Location/Schedule: Victoria, TX/Full-Time; This position may require up to 20% of travel or more and may require work beyond regular business hours and/or on weekends.

Responsibilities
Diabetes Education/ Care Instructions
Develops, maintains, and provides individualized diabetes self-education and support/care plans for program participants (patients) and monitors progress on a quarterly basis.
Collaborates with referring providers and other healthcare professionals who are not part of the Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) service regarding education provided, education plans, and outcomes.
Provides preventive education to the community and students.
Documents and maintains class participants’ education records and health care needs.
Maintains State Department of Health records as required.
Travels to various education locations and assumes responsibility of assigned location(s).
Patient Assessments
Performs comprehensive initial and quarterly reassessments of participant’s education and health care needs, including diabetes self-management knowledge, skills, and readiness for behavioral/lifestyle change.
Collects biometric data, including blood pressure, heart rate, weight, BMI, body fat percentage, blood glucose, and hemoglobin A1c (HBA1c).
Maintains and operates biometric equipment for initial and quarterly reassessments.
Documents assessment and biometric data.
Program Development
Assists in developing new enhancements to diabetes education program and related services.
Develops new outreach education programs according to emerging community needs.
Required Education and Experience
Associate degree in Nursing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two years of related work experience as a Registered Nurse, including experience in diabetes education.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Registered Nurse – Texas Board of Nursing. Basic Life Support certification. Licensure/certification must be maintained for continued experience.
Basic Life Support – American Heart Association
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
5 years of related work experience as a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES).
Bilingual (Spanish and English)
Ability to multi-task
Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES)
Strong ability to work with different low-income populations.
Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of standard nursing procedures and techniques.
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
Knowledge of confidentiality laws and regulations and ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to use and manage an electronic medical/health records system.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Strong written and communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Time management and organizational skills.
Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines.
