Addressing Black representation in the energy industry

At Octopus Energy, our mission is to drive the global renewable revolution and make green energy affordable for all. In order to succeed, we need to build a team that represents everyone in our society. Unfortunately, Black professionals make up < 2% of the energy workforce, which is a significant underrepresentation compared to the ethnic composition of the UK. To help address the issue, we have created this internship programme that is only open to candidates who identify with any Black, Black British, African or Caribbean background. We are committed to promoting equality, and this internship is an important step in our effort to foster greater diversity and inclusiveness in our business and industry.

Introducing the Collective – Octopus Energy’s renewable energy investment platform

While Octopus Energy powers millions of homes with award-winning customer service and innovative energy products, the Collective helps drive the shift to a cleaner, fairer energy system by giving people the opportunity to invest in green energy projects. Launched in February 2025, the Collective is Octopus’ green energy investment platform, and our internship is an exciting opportunity to experience working in a start-up environment. Our first two green energy projects sold out in 6 days after raising a total of £1m investment, and we’re just getting started - we’re primed to become the number 1 investment platform for green energy projects in the UK and beyond. We’re looking for someone who has a passion for green energy with an interest in how we can make investment in renewables available to more people. 

We are a small but mighty team, where members are agile and work across multiple areas. Work is split across running our platform, working on the next green energy projects to offer to investors, and thinking long term about the Collective’s future. If your application is successful, you will learn more about the process of launching a renewable energy project for investment and everything that’s going on behind the scenes of running our investment platform.
