The Denver Fire Department is seeking a qualified candidates for our Plans Review Specialist position. This position offers the opportunity to directly support safe development in Denver, collaborate with multiple city agencies, and work in an environment where technical expertise and public service intersect. You’ll contribute to building a safer, more resilient community while growing your professional skills in planning, code compliance, and development review.
The Plan Review Specialist I plays a key role in ensuring safe and compliant development throughout the City and County of Denver. You will review and interpret development applications and construction documents to ensure they meet municipal codes, policies, and regulations necessary for permit issuance. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys detailed analysis, problem-solving, and working closely with diverse customers such as contractors, architects, homeowners, elected officials, and the general public.
What You’ll Do
Review, examine, and interpret development project applications and construction documents to determine compliance with municipal codes and requirements.
Prepare plan review notices identifying deficiencies and outlining required corrections to ensure compliance.
Utilize the citywide project database to record contacts, decisions, permits, and other project-related information.
Interpret and advise customers on municipal codes, policies, and regulations.
Respond to administrative and technical inquiries from City Council, the Mayor’s Office, contractors, architects, engineers, builders, homeowners, and the general public.
Research land use, development history, zone lots, and permits to support code analysis and plan review.
Identify required permits, licenses, approvals, guidelines, ordinances, and standards for each project.
Coordinate approvals across city agencies, boards, and commissions to facilitate compliance.
Perform additional duties as assigned, including potential redeployment in citywide emergency situations.
About You:
Our Ideal Candidate will:
Obtain the ICC Fire Plans Examiner (F3) certification within 1 year after date of hire (The Denver Fire Department will sponsor this certification and all Continuing Education requirements)
Experience with Accela Fire Prevention Solutions or interest in learning new software
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and related business software
Exceptional customer service skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and provide professional support to internal and external stakeholders both in person and over the phone
Be collaborative and team oriented
Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:
Education Requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience applying codes and regulations to zoning and/or construction projects through inspection, investigation, design, and/or plan review.
Education and Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
