The opportunity:
To join a successful team underwriting and managing a portfolio of port, terminal and marine trade risks aligning to Markel’s underwriting principles and authority limits. You will be managing and seeking to grow your own book of business in line with appetite, strategy and combined ratio targets
What you’ll be doing:
- Understand and promote collaborative interaction with claims and other internal functions to develop policy wordings and coverage
- Analyse and interpret data to enhance Markel’s underwriting capabilities
- Develop strong relationships with new and existing brokers and clients
- Provide input into the broker/customer engagement plan for a portfolio of brokers and use this to drive quote requests and conversion. Influence brokers and advance Markel's interests through strong interpersonal and presentation skills. Cultivate established relationships with brokers and end-customers, with the capability to discuss complex risks/solutions and win customer confidence and business/technical sales
- Understand the competitive environment and the differences in wordings/limits/line-sizes/service offerings of competitors versus Markel
- Ability to support and contribute to the wholesale marketing strategy by writing articles and opinion pieces for given class of business; increasing personal exposure by promoting self externally as a thought leader / class expert
- Demonstrate firm understanding and day-to-day application of key finance reports (e.g. divisional Profit & Loss account); concepts (e.g. GAAP versus underwriting year reporting) and metrics (e.g. combined ratio) and how underwriting actions impact overall financial performance
- Demonstrate ability to support and contribute to the business planning process for Transport and Logistics classes of business
- Achieve results by approaching change in a positive manner; taking ownership and accountability for own development and achievement of goals; actively helping others to succeed; demonstrating inclusive behaviours
- Ensure that business written complies with all relevant regulatory standards. Understand conduct risk, including monitoring and MI requirements. Understand the Senior Manager Conduct Rules, what constitutes reasonable steps and can identify and report potential conduct rule breaches
What you will bring to the role:
- Underwrite profitable business by accepting open market and delegated risks for the cargo liability and marine professional indemnity classes according to Markel's underwriting principles and in line with authority limits.
- Modify data sets and integrate into thinking and analysis, understand broker analysis, challenge assumptions and methodology and use analytical skills to enhance Markel's underwriting capabilities. Use internal data and technical rating engines, analysis or reports to understand and explain drivers of performance. Implement pro-active practices to ensure remedial plans can be deployed rapidly to address loss-making business.
- Fully comprehend, draft or amend liability policy wordings and clauses. Promote collaborative interactions with claims to develop policy wordings that ensure a strong customer service and protect Markel’s combined ratio

The Transport & Logistics team is a significant department of the Specialty division. The account is circa USD100m of income and is written over four subclasses; Ports and Terminals, Marine Trades, Cargo Liability and Marine Professional Indemnity. We are a recognised market-leader in every one of these classes with strong client relationships around the world built on a high level of service to strategic brokers. This role forms part of the Transport & Logistics underwriting team, focusing on underwriting liability and property package policies globally for the ports, terminal and marine trades industries as well as cargo liabilities and marine professional indemnity.
