Position Profile: Mechanical Discipline Manager

In this pivotal role, you will oversee the design and construction administration of mechanical systems critical to operational efficiency and sustainability. Your expertise will encompass HVAC and energy systems, plumbing, specialized piping systems for healthcare and laboratories, as well as fire protection systems.

As part of your responsibilities, you will conduct thorough due diligence studies and condition assessments of existing systems, feasibility and conceptual design studies complete with preliminary cost estimates, and comprehensive energy audits. You'll also assess indoor air quality and contribute to utility master planning.

This role positions you as the professional of record and as a mentor, guiding technical personnel across Hanson’s national offices. You’ll collaborate closely with project managers and task managers  to optimize workflow and elevate our standing as a technical leader in the industry. This position is based in our Orlando, FL office, offering the flexibility of a hybrid remote work schedule.

A Day in the Life of a Mechanical Discipline Manager at Hanson

Imagine your typical day in this dynamic role:

  • Team Leadership: Supervise and empower technical personnel to meet HR standards, foster resource redundancy, and ensure consistent performance.
  • Project Execution: Collaborate with the project managers and task managers to deliver high-quality technical documents that align with project requirements.
  • Resource Management: Assist in forecasting resource needs, managing workflows, and monitoring utilization to address workload imbalances.
  • Thought Leadership: Partner with other Discipline Managers to enhance our reputation as an industry leader through presentations, publications, and participation in professional associations.
  • Strategic Insight: Contribute to strategic planning, identifying emerging technologies, and refining our technical competencies.
  • Proposal Support: Provide expertise in proposal development, helping assess go/no-go decisions and scoping.
  • Skills Optimization: Identify and bridge skill gaps among disciplines to streamline our technical assignments and project needs.
  • HR Collaboration: Work with HR to ensure compliance with policies, personnel reviews, and professional development initiatives.
  • Leadership Collaboration: Operate under the guidance of the Facilities Practice Lead based in Raleigh, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

What We’re Looking For

We believe the right qualifications will set you up for success in this impactful role:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Mechanical Engineering in Florida or the ability to obtain it within six months.
  • At least 10 years of experience in the consulting services industry focusing on HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection.
  • Proven experience in preparing mechanical construction drawings and specifications, conducting construction administration, and performing facility condition assessments and HVAC studies.
  • Supervisory experience.

Ideal Candidate Qualities:

  • LEED accreditation.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, building, and energy codes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with strong task leadership skills.
  • Experience in field observation and effective communication with contractors.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft® Office, AutoCAD, and REVIT.
  • Familiarity with energy analysis software, such as ComCheck and EnergyGauge Summit, and load calculation software, such as Trane Trace 700.
  • Experience with energy audits, MEP commissioning, and retro-commissioning.
  • Supervisory experience, managing teams across different regions.
