Job Summary:

To provide compassionate religious/spiritual support to employees, students, patients, and patient family members. To counsel individuals seeking guidance and assistance.

Education & Experience

Masters of Divinity from an accredited association of Theological School, and 4 units of clinical pastoral education.

One (1) year of experience as a chaplain in a hospital setting preferred.  Experience may not be substituted for educational requirement.

Ecclesiastical endorsement required.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  Certified or eligible for Chaplaincy Certification. Must obtain certification within two years of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of philosophical systems and religions.  Knowledge of human behavior.  Verbal and written communication skills.  Active listening skills. Compassionate interpersonal skills. Knowledge of ethics.

Responsibilities

  • Provides counseling and other spiritual education activities for employees, students, and patients.
  • Supports the end-of-life care for patients by offering pastoral support and counseling to patients and families.
  • Administers religious rites or ordinances; prepares and delivers spiritual care services.
  • Studies, interprets, and teaches religious laws, doctrines, and/or traditions.
  • Promotes ethical behavior within UMMC and provides consultation on ethical behavior.
  • Documents spiritual counseling for patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
