At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security and human spaceflight.

At Blue Origin, mass properties management is not an administrative job.  This is a system-level engineering position where mass managers are expected to develop highly technical understanding of our engines and the vehicles they power. As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will be responsible for mass properties control, analysis, verification, data management, and documentation for one or more engine program.  Your engagement spans all program phases, from conceptual design, through development, production, deployment, and post-flight.

As a systems engineer focused on mass properties, you will be responsible for managing the engine mass throughout the development lifecycle.  This includes identifying mass savings opportunities at the engine system level, partnering with design teams to develop cost/benefit analysis, tracking engine mass and predicting future mass as designs are refined and risks and opportunities are realized. You will contribute to continuous improvement of mass properties processes and tools, relentlessly focusing on value and seeking to eliminate waste in our processes and tools whenever possible. This work will require close partnership with engineers in mass properties, manufacturing, quality, cost, and software development across the business.  Your ability to partner and earn trust with folk across the organization is essential to our success.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop mass allocations from the system level to subsystems and components
  • Perform detailed mass properties calculations from 3D CAD models
  • Maintain mass properties database ensuring it reflects the most recent configurations
  • Assign mass uncertainty based on your personal and deep understanding of design/analysis maturity and expected unit-to-unit variability
  • Manage mass growth risk and opportunities; help teams develop mitigation plans throughout the product lifecycle
  • Aggregate mass properties data into easy-to-read reports for program leaders and design teams
  • Partner with design teams to develop mass properties verification plans at all levels of integration
  • Develop plans and procedures to measure weight and CG of Engines and critical subassemblies
  • Lead mass properties control board(s); presenting status and developing actions to ensure mass properties success
  • Engage with other mass properties managers, manufacturing engineers, and enterprise software specialists to continuously improve enterprise tools and processes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical, aerospace engineering, or a relevant technical degree
  • 0-5 years of experience in aerospace engineering or complex electromechanical systems
  • Familiarity with systems engineering practices and configuration management
  • Significant software skills including MS Excel, MATLAB, and CAD (Creo preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to pull teams together to solve problems
  • Demonstrated ability to earn trust, develop collaborative professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills
  • The ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, while contributing to a team-oriented and collaborative culture
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in mass properties engineering with aerospace or complex electro-mechanical products per ANSI/AIAA S-120 (2015), SAWE standard or similar
  • Experience developing and improving mass properties process and tool chains
  • Experience weighing aerospace parts and complex assemblies
  • Experience developing and executing Monte Carlo analysis for mass predictions
  • Knowledge of rocket engines and space vehicles
  • Design experience including analysis and drawing development
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management software (Windchill preferred)
  • Experience developing Confluence pages and heavily working in JIRA, including writing JQL filters, use of Kanban boards, and managing projects using SCRUM
