Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer, the Executive Director of Enterprise Architecture will be responsible for shaping and guiding the university's technology landscape, ensuring that it aligns with our IT Impact and university Here and Next strategic objectives, promotes innovation, and enhances operational efficiency across various academic, research, and administrative areas. The Executive Director of Enterprise Architecture will lead the strategic planning and execution of WashU's enterprise architecture initiatives. Enterprise Architecture sits at the heart of strategy and execution. This visionary leader will possess a passion for leveraging technology and enterprise architecture to drive impactful research outcomes, academic excellence, and operational efficiency within a prestigious R1 university.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Develop and Implement Enterprise Architecture Strategy
- Lead a collaboration of technology architects across the university to influence and inform technology and resulting business outcomes.
- Lead the development of an inclusive enterprise architecture practice across the university, promoting the business value as an enabler of strategy formulation and as support for technology innovation.
- Ensure enterprise architecture is a key part of the project and portfolio governance prioritization, representing the right balance between university risk and agility.
- Define and execute the enterprise architecture vision, strategy, and roadmaps for the university's mission, considering a highly esteemed institution's unique needs and goals.
- Collaborate with Senior Leadership Team (SLT) stakeholders, academic leaders, and hospital partners to understand their requirements and translate them into technology solutions that support cutting-edge research and academic excellence.
- Stay abreast of emerging technology trends, industry best practices, and academic medical center innovations to inform the development and implementation of the university's enterprise architecture framework.
Lead Enterprise Architecture Governance
- Establish and oversee a robust governance framework for enterprise architecture, ensuring compliance with industry standards, security protocols, and data governance policies.
- Develop and maintain architectural principles, guidelines, and standards that guide technology decision-making across the university.
- Drive collaboration with technical teams, academic departments, and administrative units to ensure adherence to architectural guidelines and promote system design and integration consistency.
Alignment with the Technology Portfolio and Innovation
- Identify strategic opportunities to leverage technology and enterprise architecture to advance digital initiatives, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and promote innovation.
- Collaborate with the university at large to align technology solutions with their specific needs and enable impactful research outcomes.
- Establish partnerships with strategic vendors, industry leaders, research organizations, and government agencies to explore collaborative opportunities that leverage technology and enterprise architecture in IT projects.
Collaborate with IT Leadership and Campus Stakeholders
- Assess disruptive forces impacting the university and identify technology-enabled innovation opportunities that enable the business strategy.
- Run technology experiments to create new products and services and integrate the best of these into steady-state operations for the organization.
- Lead the Creation of Alignment Across Business and IT.
- Work with the CIO and IT leaders across the university to find the right enterprise architecture organizational design to drive business outcomes.
- Lead analysis of the business' future-state capabilities and future (and current) IT environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement to drive the business toward its targeted outcomes.
- Ensure the enterprise architecture organizational design process leads to a more efficient and effective business and IT operating model, significantly improved results (profitability, customer service, internal operations), and EA resources who are empowered and committed to the integration of business and IT.
Team Leadership and Development
- Build and lead a high-performing team of enterprise architects and technology experts, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive culture within the team, promoting knowledge sharing, innovation, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Champion professional development opportunities for team members, keeping them informed about emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to enterprise architecture in higher education.

Working Conditions
- The work is performed in the offices located across the university's campuses.
- Activities will require trips to many university offices and offsite locations.
- This role is preferred to be an in-person, on-campus presence; a hybrid remote work option is available for the right candidate.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
- Proven ability to provide and deliver innovative IT solutions, including those that enable digital transformation, at an organization of comparable scale and complexity. The solutions meet key organizational / university-wide goals and objectives within stakeholders' agreed quality, budget, and time requirements.
- Experience leading digital business strategy, and experience with successful deployment of new IT technologies and development processes in a medium to large IT organization. Demonstrated experience managing strategic vendor relationships.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications such as PMP, TOGAF, ITIL, or CISSP are highly desirable.
- Possess a wide understanding of IT technology and vendors combined with the ability to evangelize new developments to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience deploying IT solutions across a diverse array of industries, which ideally includes teaching and learning, healthcare, and academic-based research.
Creative Problem Solving / Strategic Thinking
- Strong knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks such as TOGAF with a demonstrated ability to adapt and tailor frameworks to meet the unique needs of a research university.
- Deep understanding of research computing, high-performance computing (HPC), data-intensive computing, and data management practices in a medical research university environment.
- Proven experience in leading large-scale enterprise architecture initiatives and successfully aligning technology solutions with research and academic objectives.
- Strong strategic thinking abilities, focusing on innovation, creativity, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

- Demonstrated leadership and influence as a key member of a senior management team, possessing excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills together with a commitment to the mission of the institution.

Salary Range
$155,700.00 - $274,000.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
