About You

This unique new role is suited to someone who operates at the intersection of geopolitics, research, and national security. As Manager, Research Security at the newly created Global Resilience Office at RMIT, you will help shape how a globally connected university understands and manages risk in its research activities. You will work closely with senior leaders, researchers, and research management teams to assess international partnerships, interpret complex legislation, and design practical frameworks that protect people, data, intellectual property and reputation while enabling research to thrive.

You may come from the national security community or from a university or institutional research risk background, but you will be comfortable giving high-level advice, building policy, and thinking systemically. This is a rare opportunity to build new research security capability from the ground up, influence university wide decision-making, and position RMIT at the forefront of research security and global resilience in Australia.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:

  • Minimum of 5 years related experience preferably in the areas of research security, national security, defence or intelligence, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A strong familiarity of the Commonwealth’s legislative frameworks and policies on national security, research security, export controls, autonomous sanctions, defence research, foreign interference and foreign influence.

  • Excellent communication and influence skills to effectively communicate on complex and sensitive issues; design, draft and present guidelines, policies, training materials, reports; and deliver persuasive and impactful executive briefings to senior, diverse and specialist and non-specialist audiences.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, including the ability to anticipate issues, navigate complexity and shape strategic solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive and detailed risk analyses of complex research projects, especially in STEM and critical technologies, and legislative and compliance implications and guidelines that impact them, and to use good judgement in assessing complex projects and employing effective problem-solving techniques.

  • Competence and experience in developing and implementing risk intelligence, management and compliance frameworks and communicating these to diverse stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently, while managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.

This role requires Australian citizenship, as the successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.
