Job Description

The Registered Dispatch Nurse in the Center for Transport Medicine is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the safe transfer of patients (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult) between facilities, ensuring a smooth and efficient process for all involved. They must demonstrate excellent communication skills, critical thinking, and proficiency with the use of information technology to handle the complexities of patient care coordination effectively.

They maintains compliance with Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) standards.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Manages, prioritizes, triages, and processes patient (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult) transfers to and from Lurie Children’s.  
  • Documents clinical information (e.g., vital signs, physical exam findings, and lab/imaging results) to ensure appropriate care, transfer, and disposition. 
  • Recommends appropriate medical interventions for the stabilization of critically ill patients to the referring facility based on transport team protocols, including anticipation of potential patient deterioration and emergency situations.
  • Documents treatment recommendations.
  • Acts as a central point of communication to ensure timely care, while also providing support and care recommendations to referring hospitals.
  • Ensures clear and professional communication and exchange of clinical information between healthcare providers and services to facilitate a seamless patient transfer. 
  • Collaborates with the Patient Access Center (PAC) to secure bed placement.
  • Determines the appropriate Transport Team and mode of transport, considering the patient's condition and operational situation. 
  • Provides exceptional customer service to all stakeholders, including patients, families, co-workers, referring center, and others to foster trust, loyalty, and a positive experience for everyone. 
  • Other job functions as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BSN graduate of a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois active and in good standing.
  • Minimum of 3 years pediatrics experience in high acuity inpatient setting (intensive care, emergency department, transport etc.).
  •  Demonstrates extensive knowledge of neonatal/pediatric diagnoses and management.  Equivalent experience may be considered.   
  • Basic Life Support Certification required. PALS/NRP/ACLS/TNCC preferred and required in the first year of hire. Nurses are required to obtain C-NPT within two years of hire. 
  • Demonstrates strong leadership qualities by making independent decisions and taking decisive action, even in high-stress situations. 
  • Strong proficiency in Epic, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Bed management, admission and discharge/ dispatch experience strongly preferred.

Pay Range

$40.00-$66.00 Hourly
