The Onyx Research Data Tech organization is GSK’s Research data ecosystem which has the capability to bring together, analyze, and power the exploration of data at scale. We partner with scientists across GSK to define and understand their challenges and develop tailored solutions that meet their needs. The goal is to ensure scientists have the right data and insights when they need it to give them a better starting point for and accelerate medical discovery. Ultimately, this helps us get ahead of disease in more predictive and powerful ways.

Onyx is a full-stack shop consisting of product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and DevOps, data / metadata / knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all geared toward:​

  • Building a next-generation, metadata- and automation-driven data experience for GSK’s scientists, engineers, and decision-makers, increasing productivity and reducing time spent on “data mechanics”.
  • Providing best-in-class AI/ML and data analysis environments to accelerate our predictive capabilities and attract top-tier talent.
  • Aggressively engineering our data at scale, as one unified asset, to unlock the value of our unique collection of data and predictions in real-time.

Purpose of Onyx

Onyx Product Management is at the heart of our mission, ensuring that everything from our infrastructure, to platforms, to end-user facing data assets and environments is designed to maximize our impact on R&D. The Product Management team partners with R&D stakeholders and Onyx leadership to develop a strategic roadmap for all customer-facing aspects of Onyx, including data assets, ontology, Knowledge Graph / semantic search, data / computing / analysis platforms, and data-powered applications. 

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior user researcher to lead our user research. You will be responsible for overseeing user research strategies, process development, execution, and data analysis. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, UI/UX designers, engineers, and scientific customers to drive user centric design decisions and enhance overall user experience and user success of our data products and services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive user research strategy aligned with GSK and Onyx business goals and user needs.
  • Execute the user research strategies effectively by engaging stakeholders in scientific dialogues to improve user success.
  • Understand current state of scientific workflows and identify use cases with highest potential impact that are implementation ready.
  • Identify new use cases across personas with the potential to be transformed by Onyx through user interviews, process mapping.
  • Assist engineering team with creation of testing strategies for use cases deployed in the customer environment.
  • After product launch, ensure product delivery on challenging scientific goals.
  • Understand the value of deploying Onyx enabled scientific applications through deep understanding of challenges of customers’ current state.
  • Translate user requests into actionable product requirements for engineering teams.
  • Build relationships with customers; understand customer’s processes and objectives; and introduce new ways of doing things better and more productive and solicit feedback.
  • Research competition and market trends and propose roadmap trade-offs between parity and innovation.

Why You?

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in bioinformatics, biology, computational biology or a related scientific discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience with a wide range of user research methodologies and techniques, including quantitative and qualitative research methods with Bachelor’s.
  • 5+ years of experience with a wide range of user research methodologies and techniques, including quantitative and qualitative research methods with Master’s.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD
  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry, biotech industry and digital healthcare industry.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex data and communicate insights.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, data mining, and interpretation of complex scientific data sets. Skills in using software tools like Python, R or MATLAB are beneficial.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, work effectively in cross-functional team environment.
  • Interpersonal skills and motivation to build relationships proactively with a wide, global network.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment.
  • A foundation in biology is preferred, this includes understanding concepts such as target discovery, NGS, small molecule discovery, large molecule discovery.

The annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges from $145,350 to $196,650 taking into account a number of factors including work location, the candidate’s skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
