Position Summary

Most WashU Licensed Practical Nurse jobs hold regular clinic hours — no nights or weekends — and all are within an environment characterized by innovation and excellence.

Position functions as an LPN to physicians in the Gastroenterology Division helping to ensure the orderly and timely provision of excellent inpatient and outpatient medical care. Position functions within a team environment in the Gastroenterology Division. Fast-paced medical office work environment with work deadlines, periodic crisis management, patient/family interaction, potential exposure to infectious materials in the clinic setting. Extensive time spent on the phones and computer terminals.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Administrative Duties

  • Acts as a liaison between physicians and patients, fielding phone calls, follow-up with patients, referring physicians and their support staff, clinical justification for insurance reimbursement of patient medication, answering questions, scheduling outpatient office visit appointments, and communicating lab results.
  • Schedules tests and procedures; coordinating schedules with inpatient and outpatient nursing staffs, patients, and physicians. Completes necessary paperwork accurately and thoroughly. Makes appropriate phone calls and coordinates those involved in successfully providing outpatient as well as inpatient care.
  • Explains pre- and postoperative instructions to patients and calls patients with test results.
  • Occasionally assists physician in outpatient office setting and assists in supporting the physician follow-up plan for the patient during their office hours.
  • Aids in the updating and data entry in electronic medical records.
  • Promptly alerts physicians of abnormal test results.
  • Assists in the assessment, monitoring, and termination of prescribed tests.
  • Observes, monitors, and responds appropriately to changes in patient treatments.
  • Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of patient care plans with other members of the patient care team.

  • Arranges and coordinates meetings as requested.
  • May be asked to help cover in the absence of other supportive staff

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Administrative Functions

  • Answers phone, screens and routes calls providing information in accordance with Division policy.
  • Provides assistance in the day-to-day administration of physician practices.
  • Arranges and coordinates meetings as requested.

Other Functions

  • May be asked to help cover in the absence of other supportive staff in the Gastroenterology Division.
  • Maintains a physician clinical and administrative schedule.
  • Occasional clinic work with direct patient care may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of recent physician’s office or hospital experience.
  • Epic experience.
  • Interactive communication skills with ability to work with physicians, patients and support staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, a professional demeanor, and discretion.
  • Working knowledge of fundamentals anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
  • Willingness to develop computer skills.
  • Working knowledge of general nursing theory and practice with ability to recognize and interpret symptoms/conditions and assist in emergency or adverse situations.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of LPN program.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current LPN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois depending on location or received within 3 months from date of hire. Basic Life Support Certification required and must obtained within one month of employment. Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.

Salary Range

$20.57 - $30.84 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
