The Pharmacy Technician – Inpatient supports pharmacy operations at Akron General, providing essential medication distribution and operational services across multiple inpatient care areas. Working within the inpatient pharmacy on the hospital’s first floor, this role rotates through a variety of responsibilities including medication inventory management, medication delivery, triaging requests, inventory checks, restocking, and supporting daily pharmacy workflows. Caregivers collaborate closely with pharmacists and clinical teams to ensure medications are prepared, distributed, and available when needed to support patient care. While this position does not provide direct patient care, it plays a vital role in promoting patient safety, medication access, and operational efficiency through attention to detail, teamwork, and a commitment to high-quality pharmacy services.

A caregiver in this position will primarily work Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm and participate in an every-other-weekend rotation, with scheduled days off incorporated into the workweek. As operational needs arise, caregivers may also support second-shift coverage from 3:00pm to 11:30pm, including every-other-weekend responsibilities. This role may require occasional flexibility to provide additional second-shift support when needed.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Assist pharmacists in filling inpatient orders, including completion of necessary documentation. 
  • Prepare, deliver and collect all pharmacy items throughout the medical center including re-stocking of automated dispensing cabinets.  
  • Perform floor checks, stock check and assigned unit review as required.  
  • Complete all Pharmacy Keeper Activities and inspections assigned to their position.  
  • Assist Pharmacists in monitoring stock for outdated medications and properly disposing of them in a timely manner.  
  • Process medication returns / refunds to patient accounts.  
  • Compound non-sterile medications according to USP795 regulations.  
  • Prepackage medication as necessary and according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  
  • Answer telephones and assist callers with needs that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist.  
  • Interact with EPIC, our dispensing automation software (e.g. Pyxis, Carousels, etc.) and Pharmacy Keeper software to answer all questions related to the processing of a medication order.  
  • Assist customers at the service window including caregivers, couriers and others as needed.  
  • Complete mandatory education and training to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma/GED  
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) verified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)  
  • Proficient typing skills 
  • Registered as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy
    • If registered as a Certified Pharmacy Technician from out of state, then can hire as Trainee with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy while obtaining Certified Pharmacy Technician from Ohio.
    • If registered as Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy has 6 months to meet the training requirements as detailed by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy and Akron SOP and register as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Associate’s Degree or completion of some college coursework  
  • Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician   
  • Previous experience in a hospital inpatient pharmacy   
  • Previous experience with EPIC or similar programs   
  • Understanding of medical terminology and calculations    
  • Prefer proficiency in technical skills used in pharmacy practice


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform work which requires constant standing and walking.
  • A willingness to perform work which has infrequent disagreeable features and safety hazards.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
