A Brief Overview:
The Phlebotomist I will perform a variety of routine and special phlebotomy procedures as authorized by the Manager/Director. This position is also responsible for ordering tests into the Laboratory and Hospital (LIS/HIS) computer systems and documenting Lab receipt of specimens. This position may also include minor processing of various laboratory specimens.

What you will do:

  • Adheres to NorthShore attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Adheres to the laboratory dress code policy.
  • Completes competency and work-related assignments within the established time frame.
  • Follows all Infection Control and safety-related policies and procedures and uses appropriate PPE.
  • Is knowledgeable and compliant with Federal, State, and local laws that apply to area of responsibility.
  • Follows the respective specimen collection etiquette policy when greeting patients in the OPL or inpatient units.
  • Verifies patient identification by requesting patient provide correct spelling of their full name and date of birth.
  • For inpatients, ensures the proper wristband has been applied prior to scanning with Soft ID handheld device.
  • Contacts physician offices for patient orders when they are not available in Epic or elsewhere.
  • Takes verbal orders and completes all appropriate paperwork.
  • Processes SIL testing requests.
  • Answers phone calls in accordance with the telephone etiquette policy.
  • Answers questions and resolves issues to the extent possible.
  • Provides specific instructions to patients for patient collected specimens such as urine, stool, sputum, etc.
  • Provides directions to patients on how to get to their desired locations.
  • Provides information on availability of results to patients and answers any other questions that the patient might have.
  • Distributes Point of Service Surveys.
  • Upon request generates patient reports and faxes or processes as directed.
  • Collects samples from adults, children and infants using venipuncture or finger/heel stick as appropriate.
  • Collects patient specimens in accordance with test requirements and in a manner which is appropriate for the age and/or specific patient population served.
  • For inpatients, employs SOFT ID to monitor workload, collect patient samples, print labels and/or reschedule testing.
  • Utilizes specimen collection etiquette procedure to collect patient specimens.
  • Minimizes patient blood draws for subsequent orders when appropriate (inpatient orders).
  • Ensures all orders are reviewed for accuracy/completeness.
  • Verifies patient identification by requesting patient provide correct spelling of their full name and date of birth.
  • For inpatients, ensures the proper wristband has been applied prior to scanning with Soft ID handheld device.
  • Collects blood samples for specific tests ensuring volume is adequate and correct tubes are utilized.
  • Labels all specimens appropriately with the correct label.
  • Complies with blood minimization policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Collects non-blood specimens according to established procedure: nasopharyngeal, throat, nasal swabs and labels with correct specimen label.
  • Participates in the collection of material for cystic fibrosis sweat test determinations.
  • Collects all STAT and timed test requests within 15 minutes of page or desired collection time when applicable.
  • Communicates with nursing unit when delays are anticipated.
  • Records temperature/humidity checks as delineated.
  • Cleans and stocks patient phlebotomy stations/carts and other work areas and ensures all supplies have current expiration dates.
  • Notifies supervisor or delineated person of low par values.
  • Assists with storage of newly received supplies.
  • Assists with training of new staff.

What you will need:

  • Diploma or Vocational Degree Required Or
  • High School Preferred
  • Phlebotomy training experience strongly preferred.
  • Outgoing compassionate personality.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in phlebotomy, exceptional customer service skills as well as the ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • CPR or BLS - American Heart Association (AHA) PBT(ASCP) Preferred And
  • CPR or BLS - American Heart Association (AHA) CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) for the Healthcare Provider Required
