Overview:

We are seeking an enthusiastic student to join our R&D Mechanical Engineering department, focusing on mechanical, opto-mechanical, and thermal design to contribute to the development of our photonics products. These products are integral to telecom networks and data centers, with key projects including the design of Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) products. WSS development is inherently multidisciplinary, involving optics, MEMS, hermetics, micro-optics assembly, and electronics. Our products have stringent design requirements, making the mechanical design both challenging and rewarding. These requirements may include wide operating temperature ranges, temperature cycling tests, damp heat tests, and mechanical shock, vibration, and drop tests. The complexity of these competing design criteria makes the opto-mechanical design of our products particularly demanding. WSS technology is cutting-edge and central to Lumentum’s Agile Optical Network product portfolio, handling a significant portion of the world’s voice and internet traffic.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a truly multidisciplinary environment and gain insights into the product development process at Lumentum. In this role, students will engage in the design and optimization of opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical, and thermal solutions, working in an R&D lab environment to solve problems related to materials science, thermal/mechanical design, and process control. Students will collaborate closely with the Mechanical Design, Thermal Design, Optical Design, Hermetics Design, Electrical Design, and Process/Manufacturing Engineering teams throughout their work term, providing a broad overview of the various disciplines involved in our product development.

The Opportunity:

8 month term (preferred):          Jan 2025 to Aug 2025

4 month term:                              Jan 2025 to Apr 2025

Work Term Model:                      Onsite

Responsibilities:

  • Gain familiarity with Lumentum’s cutting-edge opto-mechanical designs and technologies.
  • Conduct mechanical design, analysis, and testing for telecom/datacom applications, including shock, vibration, and thermal testing.
  • Design and conduct experiments to investigate the influence of systematically controlled variations in process factors, ensuring design and process optimization.
  • Develop and implement epoxy application processes for optical components, including material preparation, aging tests, and optical/mechanical measurements using state-of-the-art measurement tools/techniques.
  • Provide regular progress updates and reports.

Skills:

  • Highly motivated and energetic, with a strong desire to learn.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Fundamental understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
  • Experience with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) and familiarity with FEA/CFD.
  • Experience interpreting mechanical part/assembly drawings, including GD&T.
  • Previous experience and demonstrated ability in designing, conducting, and analyzing experiments.

Recommended Education:

  • 3rd or 4th year / graduate student in: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering Physics, Nanotech Engineering, or similar disciplines.
