Job Summary:

Infusion nurses give patients medication and fluids via injection. Monitor patients, manage their tubing, maintain arterial catheters, and stay aware of potential drug complications, throughout the clinic visit.

Education & Experience

Must be licensed as RN for one (1) year. Two (2) years of RN experience in specified area preferred. BSN preferred.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  Valid RN license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Role autonomy and independence, patient care and relationships, teamwork, patient teaching, innovative thinking, technical mastery. Experience and familiarity with infusion therapy preferred.  Independence and flexibility.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment of the patient before, during and after the start of the intravenous medication.
  • Determines appropriate venipuncture site and performs venous punctures and maintains the intravascular site including tubing and dressings.
  • Monitors for infections, assess and treats patients for adverse reactions and complications, initiate emergency therapies.
  • Initiates, monitors, and terminates therapies including medications, antineoplastic agents, investigational drugs, and blood products.
  • Provides and oversees direct patient care in accordance with established nursing protocols, including vital signs up to every 15 minutes, and physician's orders.
  • Provides education to patients and families regarding intravenous treatment and post discharge instructions.
  • Documents all patient-directed activities.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, frequent crouching/stooping, occasional driving, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, constant reaching, constant sitting, constant standing, constant twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
