Northrop Grumman is seeking aspiring Software Engineers to join the Mission Systems Engineering Intern Program. This position will be located in San Diego, CA. The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman’s Networked Information Solutions (NIS) Division.  At the Northrop Grumman San Diego campus our Communication/Network Solutions BU’s create the next generation of communications and signal processing systems.  We take ideas from concept to working systems aboard the world’s most advanced platforms right here in always-sunny San Diego. We design in our campus of labs and on-site advanced manufacturing just minutes from the beach and everything for which southern California is famous. The selected candidate will work in a dynamic people-focused environment where he/she will interact with users, customers and other developers.  

As an intern, you’ll participate in a summer internship program to develop competencies in a variety of software engineering specializations that may include:

  • Embedded Software Engineering
  • Digital Circuit Design
  • Agile Software Development
  • DevOps
  • SW Integration and Test
  • Software Automation

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, documents, tests and debugs software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions. Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or systems engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems. 
  • Determines computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions; designs and develops compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems.
  • Ensures software standards are met.

This position will require onsite work in either Carmel Mt or Kearny Mesa.

Basic Qualifications

A candidate must meet ALL of the below criteria. The candidate must:

  • Be a student who is enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university and will be enrolled full time in Fall 2025.
  • Be majoring in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2025.
  • Be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)
  • Have the ability to obtain Special Access Program within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher
  • Previous internship/co-op experience, leadership and teamwork capabilities, interpersonal communication skills, and activities (professional/community/extracurricular)
  • Experience in developing and delivering presentations and leading small groups
  • Experience with emerging technologies
  • Good presentation and writing/communication skills
  • Self-motivated, willing to learn, and interested in working in a team environment.
  • Experience working in an autonomous work environment on complex projects
  • Experience in developing and delivering presentations and leading small groups
  • Experience with the following: C, C++, object oriented programming, real time embedded hardware systems, VHDL design or verification, FPGAs, Electronic Design Automation (EDA) Tools: Xilinx ISE/ Vivado, Altera Quartus, ModelSim/QuestaSim, RF communication systems, Rhapsody, GreenHills MULTI Integrated Development Environment, GIT, Jira, Sonarqube, ClearCase/ClearQuest, GreenHills Integrity Real Time Operating System, Digital Signal Processing, LabVIEW, NI TestStand , Agile development experience (SCRUM, Scrum Master, Product Owner), Linux

Intern Pay Range:

Bachelor’s: $20.25 to $37.25 per hour

Master’s: $29.25 to $46.25 per hour

Salary Range: $20.25 - $46.25

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
