What You’ll Get to Do:

You will provide our NAVSEA/NSWC/MSC Technical and Program Office clients with expert technical support in developing the next Navy ships. You will perform as a key engineering lead directly supporting our key clients and be a recognized technical leader among colleagues and team members performing engineering tasking on programs throughout the Navy’s fleet – supporting aircraft carriers, combatants, amphibious and auxiliary ships from program initiation through concept, design, construction, life cycle, and fleet support.  You will lead critical engineering efforts across various ship design programs.  You will advise Machinery Design Managers, Ship Design Managers, Program/Project Managers, Task Leads, and colleagues on the best practices for propulsion and auxiliary systems design, machinery arrangement, and system integration for both new construction and fleet modernization programs.  As a Senior Naval Propulsion Engineer, you will ensure Naval and Commercial Engineering Standards and Quality Assurance Processes are met while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with teammates.  You will stay current in modern ship design development tools, methods, and analyses, emerging technologies, and advanced equipment design trends.  You will be a self-starter, perform as a team player across multiple engineering projects and programs.

The Primary Focus for this role is the CACI Principal Propulsion SME for marine machinery technical areas including but not limited to Main Propulsion and Auxiliary Diesel Engines, Gas Turbines, Diesel-mechanical and Diesel-electric Propulsion Systems, Hybrid Propulsion, PTO/PTI, Reduction Gears, Propulsion Shafting, Shaft Seals, Bearings, Steering Gears,  Combustion Intake/Exhaust and Emissions Abatement Systems, Propellers, Thrusters including L, Z, and podded drives, tunnel, and other propulsor types.  Candidate will be well versed in propulsion system sizing based on resistance and powering estimates or the output of hydro power calculations using the appropriate mechanical and electrical power factors in various drive train arrangements. Candidate will be able to advise in areas such as component sizing of fuel oil, lube oil, cooling water, exhaust treatment, and start air systems, including associated flow rates, tankage sizing, specific fuel oil consumption calculations, Fuel Endurance calculations, etc. Candidate will have experience with Electrical Plant Load Analyses (EPLA) for sizing main and auxiliary generators, propulsion motors, and load shed prioritization for electric plants.  Candidate will have experience in reviewing One Line Diagrams, and a practitioners grasp of Machinery Centralized Control Systems (MCCS) and Electric Propulsion Control Systems.  Candidate will have experience with various OEM offerings conveying a practitioner’s knowledge for all phases of acquisition based on deck plate and/or shipyard, and Naval, MSC, or OEM project experiences.  Candidate will be well versed across many ship platforms and/or have a proven track record on MSC T-Ships, AMPHIBS, Carriers, and/or Combatants, FMS Programs, USCG Programs, Unmanned Maritime Systems (UMSs) and/or Unmanned Maritime Vehicles (UMVs).  Candidate has industry connections, and an ability to market to customers such as NAVSEA 05Z, shipyards, and other marine engineering consulting firms and willing to grow CACI’s machinery team presence in the marine industry.

  • Ensures that NAVSEA/NSWC/MSC Clients, Technical Warrant Holders, Ship Design Managers, Task Leads, and internal customers receive accurate technical advice in a timely fashion
  • Meets with key NAVSEA, NSWC, MSC, and PEO customers to determine future engineering and technical needs in the marketplace
  • Fosters a strong mentorship culture so that junior employees receive training, knowledge, and oversight as they mature into more capable engineers
  • Develops Subject Matter Experts who take ownership of key disciplines in engineering as it pertains to propulsion
  • Supports strategic opportunities for growth in the Naval Engineering marketspace
  • Ability to support specific areas in proposals and targeted growth areas, with willingness to learn larger proposal support efforts
  • Self-Starter, Multi-task capability, technically savvy, interpersonal skills, team player and ability to market our CACI team capabilities
  • Explicit Knowledge of ABS MVR/NVR, USCG, EPA/IMO, SOLAS, NAVY SPECs (e.g., DDS, DOD-HDBK, NSTM, TECH-PUBs, MIL-STD) and Commercial Specs (e.g., ASME, ANSI/ASTM)

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering; or similar background and/or specialized such as significant US Navy training with an Associate’s degree will be accepted in lieu of Bachelor’s degree
  • US Citizen with an Active Secret Clearance
  • Fifteen years of experience with Ten years of experience in US Naval Ship Engineering, either within the NAVSEA/PEO Governmental Organizations, Shipyard Construction and Repair, Ship Operations (as a USCG Certified Officer or US Naval Officer), NAVSEA contractor support, or similar
  • Five years of experience performing as a key leader of an engineering team or in support of projects comprised of least 10 team members and across multiple HM&E disciplines
  • Experience briefing complex technical issues (including performance, cost, schedule, and risk implications) to decision makers
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time with a current Passport
  • Capable of conducting design ship-checks onboard MSC and Navy ships

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • Fifteen years of experience performing as a key lead of NAVSEA, or MSC engineering team projects comprised of least 10 team members and across HM&E disciplines
  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related degree
  • Professional Engineering License
  • USCG Engineering License (Chief Engineer, 1st A/E, 2nd A/E, 3rd A/E Rating)
  • Lead Engineer for former NAVSEA Ship Design Manager, Former NAVSEA 05Z Technical Warrant Holder, PEO Ships SME, NAVFAC SME, or MSC SME
  • Participation in professional organizations (e.g., ASME, SNAME) by authoring professional papers, holding elected office, or serving on a national or international board.
  • Experience developing calculations for sizing Marine Machinery using Excel or Mathcad , CAESAR II, and ANSYS
  • Experience in design integration for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Dynamic Positioning systems.
