Overview:

Responsible for the quality and efficiency of the ongoing monitoring activity to ensure timely and accurate credit risk ratings and compliance with both credit policy and loan agreements for assigned segment. On a daily basis, interacts with senior management of the Credit, Business Banking and Commercial Banking Divisions regarding ongoing monitoring activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

Lead team that partners proactively with the sales and underwriting teams to prepare thoughtful risk assessment of customers on an ongoing basis to identify emerging risks or material changes in customers financial position, including evaluation of compliance with the loan agreement.  Ensures that analyses provide an independent credit quality assessment for existing loans of the Bank's largest commercial clients identifying credit risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market trends, financial trends, and other pertinent credit issues.

Oversees and manages the continuous commercial credit monitoring (CCM) activities  of multiple commercial monitoring teams enabling the timely identification of emerging credit risk so that appropriate actions can be taken to manage the risk, minimize losses and assign an accurate risk rating.  A CCM program includes but is not limited to annual reviews (and PLRs and Guarantor Assessments), interim update memos, a covenant monitoring program, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other forms of credit surveillance. 

Provides guidance, support, and leadership with regard to more complex credit relationships, as well as fostering partnership between monitoring team, underwriters and relationship managers.

Responsible for the quality, timeliness and efficiency of the monitoring activity for multiple teams.

Partner with and act as liaison between Credit Monitoring, Credit Underwriting, the sales team and 2nd line credit functions.

Foster a collaborative team culture and provide direction on training and employee development initiatives. 

Proactively manages the deployment and utilization of underwriters across the teams. Prioritizes and monitors work flow.

Responsible for adhering to and advising teams on credit policy.

Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.

Adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies.

Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities:

This position is expected to be an expert in commercial credit analysis/underwriting and must have a thorough level of expertise in the commercial credit policy and credit culture of M&T Bank. This position will play a substantial role in the monitoring and accurate risk rating of the commercial loan portfolio.
This position will provide a more efficient operating environment within Credit.

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position will have 3+ manager level direct reports and up to 40 indirect.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelors degree and 10 years relevant experience with 3 years managerial experience, or in lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 14 years education and relevant experience with 3 years of managerial experience

Education and Experience Preferred:

MBA/Advanced Degree
CPA

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $154,683.15 - $257,805.26 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
