Job Title:

Histotechnician - Surgical Pathology

Job Summary:

To process, embed, cut, and stain human tissue. Staining includes routine and special stains. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

Associate's degree with histology experience or trained on-the-job as a Histotechnician in a histology laboratory OR completion of an accredited Histotech Program or experience within the last five years in all the following areas of histology:

  • Fixation
  • Embedding/Microtomy
  • Processing
  • Staining


Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  N/A

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to properly orient, embed, and cut tissue using microtome and cryostat, understanding of tissue processing.

Responsibilities

  • Orients and embeds tissue in paraffin per standardized methods. Freezes, orients, embeds, and cuts fresh tissue.
  • Uses microtome and/or cryostat to perform microtomy on tissue specimens to exacting measures of acceptability. Files cassettes.
  • Performs routine and special stains.
  • Labels and distributes slides to pathologists. Files slides.
  • Performs and documents equipment maintenance and quality control measures.
  • Ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
