Registered Polysomnographic Technician Reader

Mercy Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, provides polysomnographic tests, or sleep study evaluations, performed by Registered Sleep Technicians. Sleep studies are monitored by Registered Sleep Technicians and then reviewed and interpreted by a board-certified sleep physician.  
 

A caregiver in this position works 7:00AM – 4:30PM. Work will be Tuesday - Friday.


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Score and provide interpretation of polysomnographic studies.  

  • Participate in daily reading sessions with caregivers and fellow physicians. 

  • Work with Sleep Medicine fellows, predominately during the dayshift, scoring and interpreting polysomnographic studies in accordance with Cleveland Clinic Sleep Disorders Center policies and procedures and established guidelines (Rechtschaffen and Kales, “A Manual of Standard Terminology, Techniques, and Scoring System for Sleep Stages of Human Sleep”).  

  • Review raw data and clarify problems or scoring discrepancies with recording technologists.  

  • Generate sleep reports that are technically accurate and grammatically correct.  

  • Synthesize information from the medical and sleep history and physical examination to optimize sleep study interpretation and treatment recommendations. 

  • Participate in daily protocolling of overnight studies.  

  • Interact with medical and nursing caregivers to address study design issues. 

  • Review PSG recordings with staff physicians in daily reading sessions.  

  • Make appropriate report revisions and finalize reports. 

  • Interpret all types of sleep tests, including routine polysomnograms, positive airway titration, expanded EMG and EEG montages for the evaluation of nocturnal seizures and parasomnias, multiple sleep latency and maintenance of wakefulness tests for evaluation of daytime sleepiness, and actigraphy. 

  • Stage and score sleep and events in the pediatric population.  

  • Attend regular database meetings and participate in database improvement initiatives. 

  • Train other technologists on database issues.  

  • Assist the Technical Director and medical caregivers with training fellow and resident physicians.  

  • Assist with training new technologists. 

  • Attend regular sleep research meetings and participate in the recording and interpretation of research studies as needed. 

  • Perform all duties of a Registered Technologist. 


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High school diploma of GED.  

  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.   

  • Three years of experience.  

  • Knowledge of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders manual.

Physical Requirements:

  • Full range of body motion, manual finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, corrected hearing and vision to normal to normal range and the ability to maneuver heavy equipment. Requires standing and walking for extended periods.
