Position Charter 

The Heibar Indiana Material Manager will help Heibar, a division of Clayton Homes and will play a critical role in developing, establishing operating procedures, ensuring training occurs for a new team, and for helping to coordinate the project on the ground.  The Heibar team manufactures site-built construction components like roof and floor trusses, and wall panels. This position and location will provide support to our site-built partner Arbor Homes, and in this location, we will manufacture roof and floor trusses initially, and with expansion will manufacture wall panels in the future. As the site starts up, the Material Manager will help coordinate activities at the site, including work alongside department managers to ensure coordination in the effort to reach the organization’s goals.   

The Material Manager requires working collaboratively with other departments at the facility and at Home Office including Production, Engineering, Customer Care, and Sales as well as working with Suppliers.  The Material Manager is focused on supporting and optimizing operations via integrity, professionalism, production capability, operations support, cost management, contract & process excellence, and continuous improvement.  

 

Reporting Relationships 

The Material Manager is responsible for material / inventory management, vendor management, process management, and cost management for Heibar Indiana and will report directly to the General Manager and will work closely with the Operations Team.  

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Lead, manage, & develop the Materials department 

  • Work and communicate collaboratively with the rest of the facility leadership team & corporate 

  • Facilitate a culture that is focused on team member experience, customer experience, & leadership 

  • Count and order materials to meet production or distribution requirements 

  • Avoid/Minimize material shortages & backorders to customers 

  • Maintain the least amount of material in inventory required to meet production or distribution needs 

  • Maintain inventory accuracy and minimize inventory variances 

  • Operate and order within the defined supply terms (lead time, minimum order quantity, delivery…) 

  • Review vendor backorders and address with suppliers 

  • Comply with all corporate contracts & SOPs 

  • Implement and abide by corporate policies and procedures 

  • Lead and reconcile quarterly physical inventory counts 

  • Performance of category deep dives to improve inventory turns and reduce shortages 

  • Work with suppliers and other departments to eliminate waste & improve efficiency 

  • Hold suppliers accountable to terms and performance standards 

  • Vendor management and communication 

  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure: 

  • Proper receipt & storage of inventory 

  • Proper capture of pricing, terms, & incentives (such as cash discounts & rebates) 

  • Timely payment to suppliers 

  • Proper rotation of inventory (and FIFO) 

  • Management and accounting for Damaged, Slow Moving, & Obsolete Material 

  • Management and accounting for scrap materials and scrap material sales 

  • An efficient facility layout 

  • Data integrity & maintenance (including BOMs and parts) 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

 

Required Skills 

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills 

  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills at all levels 

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, as well as basic math skills 

  • Must be detail-oriented and can multi-task effectively 

  • Ability to read and understand building specifications greatly desired 

  • Solid understanding of supply chain and inventory management systems 

  • Ability to adapt quickly and make sound decisions in a changing, fast-paced work environment 

 

Education 

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or five years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Professional Qualifications 

 

  • Minimum 5 years relevant leadership experience 

  • Contract and Vendor Management. 

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals 

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to get along with diverse personalities. 

  • Previous construction experience strongly preferred 

  • Experience in manufactured housing is greatly desired 

  • Experience in high-speed manufacturing environment preferred 

  • Ability to adapt quickly and make sound decisions in a changing, fast-paced environment 

 

Physical Requirements  

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. 

  • Work may require stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, pushing, and / or pulling 

  • Work environment is not temperature controlled and may result in exposure to extreme temperatures 

  • Work primarily involves sitting / standing, up to 4 hours at a time
