Job Summary: Prepare, compound, dispense medications, and perform other technical duties in the pharmacy department under direct supervision of a Pharmacist. Must be proficient in all responsibilities and duties of a pharmacy technician. Must demonstrate competency through supervised observation and/or any other necessary annual required competencies. This position involves routine exposure to chemotherapy and other hazardous drugs as classified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Pharmacy Technician Intern requires CPhT certification within 270 days of employment. Certification is a condition of employment that an employee must possess, obtain, and/or maintain. Failure of the condition will terminate the technician intern employment. Technician Training Program: The Wellstar pharmacy technician training course is designed to provide on the job training for pharmacy technicians seeking national certification as a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT). The program will consist of a 10-week (400 hours) training program that will offer classroom instruction and on-site training in both a community pharmacy and hospital pharmacy environment. Candidates who successfully complete the Technician training program and obtain CPHT certification could be considered as a candidate for any open position should one become available. However, successful completion of the pharmacy technician training program does not guarantee future employment opportunities with Wellstar. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: Medication Distribution a. Single Dispense - must prepare medications and/or IV for dispensing, select correct medication, correct strength, and correct form. Fill, label, and initial medication bag for a pharmacist verification. b.Bulk Dispense- Must fill multiple patient specific medications in accordance with department procedure. c.Transportation- bulk fill, first dose, and missing doses will be delivered securely to the appropriate units, while practicing appropriate procedure to ensure confidentiality for all patients. d.Missing Doses- upon request, must properly generate label, fill and have checked by a pharmacist, then dispense to the appropriate floor or unit. e.Product Preparation- must properly prepare, measure, count, medications including compound ointments, creams, oral solutions, oral solids, IV, etc. (ADC) Automatic Dispensing Cabinet a. User- must be capable of accurately adding new users to the ADC system. b. Product- must properly load ADC with correct medications after medication is checked by a pharmacist. Monitor par levels and increase or decrease as needed. c. Reports- must be able to generate needed reports to fill, track, and identify/report all discrepancies. d. Minor Maintenance- must trouble shoot minor problems with ADC. e. Restock- must accurately fill medication, fluids and stock outs as needed. f. Recall- must assist the pharmacist and inventory specialist in retrieving recalled medications. Miscellaneous Activities: g. Repackaging and bar-coding medications- must accurately label all repackaged items per Georgia Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations. h. Properly provide customer service to customers and other healthcare professionals via in-person or virtual means. i. Process any charges: late charges, supplemental, OR charges, nuclear and exception report. j. Ordering supplies and obtaining purchase orders using the appropriate ordering system. k. Must be proficient in the distribution and accountability of Controlled Substance Medications. l. Code Carts / Kits - Must restock code carts and other kits returned to pharmacy according to departmental procedure and ensure required inspections are completed. m. Must perform monthly unit and pharmacy inspections and ensure that assigned pharmacy or medication area is clean. n. Must perform out date tracking on medications in various locations of the facility. o. Monitor all temperature and humidity recordings per guidelines. Educational Activities: a.Complete two weeks of in-person didactic learning b.Complete four weeks of retail or community-based pharmacy educational rotation c.Complete four weeks of inpatient education rotation d.Pass all assigned computer-based learning modules Required Minimum Education:
  • High School Diploma General or GED General
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
  • Registered Pharmacy Tech within 270 Days
Additional License(s) and Certification(s): Required Minimum Experience: Required Minimum Skills: Basic computer skills. Good oral communication skills. Good problem solving skills. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to lift a minimum of 30 pounds. Ability to push a transportation cart of approximately 100 pounds.
