Our Power Systems Engineering team utilizes their deep knowledge of connected power grid planning, design, operation, and life-cycle management, to offer customized solutions to our global clients. Our Power Economics team offers analyses focused on the understanding and the study of the financial and physical operation of the electric power systems including generation and grid planning, system optimization, asset valuation, competitive power markets and energy policy implications. Over 700 entities worldwide use our suite of software tools to assess the economics, performance, and reliability of interconnected power systems. The Software Engineer – Power Systems Short-Circuit Analysis Expert will assist in developing/designing short-circuit analysis module. These new analytic tools will leverage the existing functionality of GE’s Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) software. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software development and a deep understanding of power systems engineering principles, particularly in short circuit analysis. Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and enhance software modules for short-circuit and fault analysis applications within PSLF
- Contribute to implementation of algorithms and numerical methods for balanced and unbalanced fault analysis
- Cognizant of various standards like IEC 60909, IEC 61363, IEEE 141/IEEE 551/ANSI C37, and G74 along with their norms and methodologies
- Collaborate with power systems engineers and domain experts to understand requirements and translate them into software solutions
- Support implementation of industry-standard short-circuit methodologies such as IEC 60909, G74, IEC 61363, and ANSI/IEEE approaches
- With growing penetration of high IBR (inverter-based resources) on the grid, advanced WTG (Wind Turbine Generator) and converter short circuit models should be developed
- Test and validate software modules to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with industry standards.
- Document software design, implementation, and testing processes to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration.
- Stay current with advancements in software development methodologies, tools, and technologies, as well as trends in power systems engineering.
- Provide software support for the short-circuit analysis tool to internal and external customers
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited college or university
- 3-5 years’ experience in Software Development, Power Systems Analysis, or the Energy Industry with focus on power systems modeling, power flow analysis, short-circuit and fault analysis
- Demonstrated knowledge of Algorithm development
- Demonstrated knowledge of bulk electric system planning and protection
Desired Characteristics
- Experience performing transmission or industrial short-circuit studies
- Understanding of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and renewable interconnection studies
- Familiarity with numerical solution methods, sparse matrix techniques, or scientific computing concepts
- Experience with power systems analysis software such as PSLF, ASPEN, ETAP, PowerFactory or PSS/E is a plus.
- Demonstrated software development skills in modern object-oriented languages (at least one of C#, Java, or Python)
- Experience developing engineering or simulation software tools
- Exposure to software QA processes, automated testing, and debugging methodologies
- Familiarity with Mercurial, Git, or other distributed revision control systems
- Self-starter with the ability to learn new technologies and work independently on technical tasks
- Ability to collaborate effectively across software and domain engineering teams
- Exposure to Agile software development methodologies is a plus
- Master’s/PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field is a plus
