The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate’s mission is to support the science and technology and environmental restoration missions of the Laboratory by providing a safe, environmentally sound, and reliable infrastructure, to provide high quality crafts and fabrication services to our customers as needed and to protect people, property, and national security.

The F&O’s Production Division provides mechanical, architectural, and civil services to build, support and maintain the Lab's infrastructure.

Position Description

The Production Division within the Facilities and Operations Directorate has an opportunity to fill the position of Master Metal Worker position. This employee will work from prints, sketches or verbal instructions. The Master Metal Worker sets up and operates machine tools, and also performs benchwork in the fabrication and finishing of metal or associated products on jobs which require the application of individual ingenuity in solving problems of method, or results required, where previous standards of operation have not been established.

The employee will be assigned to the day shift Monday – Friday 8am to 4:30pm. This position reports to the Fabrication Shop Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create metal structures, tools or decorative pieces using techniques like cutting and welding.
  • Read and interpret blueprints technical drawings and specifications.
  • Shape metal using hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery (ex. presses and grinders).
  • Perform precision work for both functional and artistic projects.
  • Inspect and repair damaged metal components or structures.
  • Restore worn or corroded metal parts.
  • Perform polishing, grinding and buffing.
  • Apply specialized techniques like stripping, waxing or sealing when required.
  • Ensure finished work meets design specifications and safety standards.
  • Measure and test completed pieces for accuracy and durability.
  • Develop custom designs or modify existing plans.
  • Work closely with internal clients, engineers, or architects.
  • Enforce workplace safety standards and proper equipment use.
  • Maintain tools and ensure compliance with regulations.

The above list of duties is not all inclusive of every duty performed by this position, but it does include the major elements in the job.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience on various metal working equipment. 
  • With limited instruction, must be able to calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.
  • Able to select types of sheet metal or nonmetallic material. 
  • Able to measure and mark dimensions and reference lines on metal sheets. 
  • Able to fasten seams or joints by welding, bolting, riveting, or soldering.
  • Possess a valid NYS driver's license and/or the ability to secure a NYS driver's license.
  • Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purpose.
  • Must successfully complete all required job trainings within the established timeframe
  • Must possess good written and verbal communication skills, including:
    • Ability to read, interpret, and follow written instructions - including procedures, work orders, and related documentation while maintaining a questioning attitude and consistently prioritizing and enforcing safety practices.
    • Demonstrated ability to accurately complete written documentation, including work orders, reports, and other required records.
    • Demonstrate strong communication skills when coordinating with customers, team members, and management to address work requirements and resolve issues.

Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirement: 

Must meet physical requirements of the position, including but not limited to:

  • Standing, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to do heavy lifting > 30 lbs.
  • Ability to do moderate lifting < 30 lbs.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders.
  • Able to work outdoors/cold and warm environments.
  • Abel to move machinery.
  • Able to use powered and hand operated hand-tools.
  • Able to do some rigging & hoisting.
  • Able to operate industrial fork trucks and fixed cranes.
  • Ability to use a respirator and other related safety equipment.
  • Good physical coordination, dexterity and balance.
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes and hearing protection.

Other information:

The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.
