Reporting to the Vice President, Labour Relations, the Senior Director, Labour Relations, provides functional leadership in the development and implementation of Labour Relations strategies. Accountable for all key Labour Relations strategies, including supporting and leading Labour negotiations, advice and counsel by teaming with business leaders to build and implement labour relations strategies in support of the organization’s workforce plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading all aspects of Loblaw labor relations for a specific unionized colleague population, under the direction of the Vice President, Labour Relations.
  • Develop strong, constructive working relationships with labor union representatives.
  • Partner with the business leaders to handle the creation and implementation of long- and short-term strategic labor objectives.
  • Partner with HRBP groups in the development and implementation of labour relations initiatives, ensuring that the business unit is appropriately supported.
  • Effectively lead and support the negotiations process to gain a unified point of view, achieve desired outcomes, and effectuate bargaining strategies that enable strategic objectives using a collaborative and integrative approach with key senior leadership constituencies and other Human Resource functions.
  • Represent the LR department on cross-functional committees for strategic business initiatives, as required.
  • Effectively partner with Legal counsel, HR partners and senior Operations leaders to provide strategic advice and counsel for internal clients regarding labor laws/relations and union contractual obligations to further organizational objectives.
  • Act as directing strategic mind for labour legal counsel in grievances, arbitrations and in tribunal proceedings.
  • Drive performance objectives, attract and retain talent, maintain compliance, and ensure administration accuracy within assigned team; build an environment that champions leadership, opportunity, and overall success.
  • Lead and develop a team of colleagues to ensure timelines are reached and strategy is implemented by way of training, mentoring, and providing direction to direct reports.
  • Keep informed of federal, provincial, and local labour laws and regulations in\order to ensure statutory compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in business, HR or related field, preferably with a CHRM or CHRP designation
  • 10 + years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources with a focus on Industrial or Labour Relations.
  • Demonstrable ability to translate business initiatives into clear, consistent, and systematic LR Strategy.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with an emphasis on verbal reasoning, negotiation, resolution of issues and listening skills. Must be able to present ideas in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills with proven ability to lead a team and deliver objectives on time and within budget.
  • A detail oriented, collaborative, proactive and results oriented style with demonstrated success in leading and supporting negotiations, mediation, and collective bargaining.
  • Proven influencing, judgment, decision making and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to cultivate and maintain working relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrable ability to coordinate and balance priorities.
  • Needs to have a highly effective and persuasive personality, be a standout colleague and leader, and an excellent facilitator of action plans.
  • Strong digital literacy.
  • Demonstrated dedication to the highest personal, professional, and ethical standards.
  • Advanced, thorough knowledge of relevant employment and workplace legislation.
  • Previous experience as an LR leader in a retail environment an asset.
