Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) status in Texas required through the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. 1-2 years of related experience preferred.

-Or-

Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program. Current Physician Assistant license through the Texas Physician Assistant Board of the Texas Medical Board. 1-2 years of related experience preferred.

Environmental / Working Conditions

This position is subject to inside environmental conditions. Protection from weather conditions, not necessarily from temperature changes. Works in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated building. Hours may vary to accommodate needs in the department as prescribed by the philosophy of the hospital. May work in units other than the assigned one with orientation. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is high risk.

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

This position requires close interaction with the medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary areas in order to maintain a quality multi-disciplinary approach to care of the critically ill patient.

Job Description

Under the direction of the department Medical Director and department Nurse Director or supervising physician (whichever applies) is responsible for following standard medical practice, in assessing patient needs and assisting in the planning and implementation of patient care. He/she will be responsible for providing patient and family support, coordination of care and education. He/she will be familiar with the hospitals mission, vision, philosophy, policies and procedures, and be in compliance with the same.

Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations

Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners or current license through the Texas Physician Assistant Board of the Texas Medical Board.

Physical Capabilities

Work of medium demand; walking, sitting, and standing most of the time while on duty. Adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills required. Talking and hearing are essential in meeting with people. Visual acuity and writing skills necessary for factual documentation.

Skills and Abilities

• Excellent basic medical knowledge with clinical skills and judgment. Possesses analytical skills to evaluate care needs, ability to gather relevant clinical data, perform thorough physical examinations, and assist with clinical patient management. Possess excellent interpersonal skills, communication ability, and exhibit appropriate judgment when dealing with patients, families and other health care providers.

• Must be able to communicate effectively with physicians, staff and patient population. Must be well organized and maintain accurate records. Familiarity with hospital organization and function of all departments within the hospital structure is essential. Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.

• Must have a working knowledge departmental and organizational policies.
