Job Summary

The Office of Broadband and Digital Equity (BDE) is seeking a high school or college intern to support the BDE Tech Team. This internship offers hands-on experience with the expansion, support, and maintenance of the FreeBmoreWiFi broadband network, a free public Wi-Fi service deployed at select recreation centers, senior centers, and community hubs across Baltimore. The intern will also gain exposure to project management and senior-level management operations.

Essential Functions

  • Support of project management practices and processes

  • Support of team scrum practices and processes

  • Support of network engineering activities such as network monitoring, issue troubleshooting, issue remediation, and quality assurance and maintenance activities

  • Support of performance reporting and metrics

  • Support of BDE program events

Minimum Qualifications:

For high school students: 

  • An interest in pursuing a career in information technology, an associated apprenticeship or technical training, or a college degree.

High school graduates:

  • An interest in pursing a career or higher education (college or professional training) in information technology.

College students:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in an associated information technology or computer science field.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Currently attend a Maryland high school as a junior/senior

  • Currently attend a Maryland higher education institution

  • Graduated from a Maryland high school, but currently attend a non-Maryland higher education institution​​

  • Graduated from a Maryland high school, and is currently enrolled or graduated from a career technical training program

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to work independently and within a team

  • Detail-oriented with a structured approach to tasks

  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams

Background Check                                        

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

Probation 

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
