Job Summary:
Performs an expanded role of an OR Surgical Technologist to encompass pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative functions. Works under the direct supervision and direction of the attending surgeon throughout the intra-operative phase, providing hemostasis, exposure, dissection, and wound closure.
Education & Experience
Education and Experience Required:
Graduate of an accredited First Assistant or Surgical Assistant program and five (5) years perioperative experience
Certifications, Licenses, or Registrations Required:
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification as a First Assistant or Surgical Assistant
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Visual acuity; manual dexterity and physical mobility; hear and orally communicate. Exposure to infectious diseases, chemical agents, and anesthetic gases. Direct contact with disease-bearing specimens, body organs and tissues, and blood and body fluids. Regular job attendance is an essential job function. Standard Precautions policy and procedures are applicable to this job.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Under direct supervision of the attending surgeon, provides hemostasis by clamping vessels and coagulating bleeding points
- Under direct supervision of the attending surgeon, provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques.
- Performs minor casting under the supervision of the surgeon.
- Under the direct supervision of the surgeon, performs wound closure of subcutaneous tissue and skin through the use of suture and staples.
- Under the direct supervision of the surgeon and Circulating RN, positions, preps, and drapes the patient and applies surgical dressings.
- Functions in the Surgical Technologist staff role. Prepares the OR and assists the RN with indirect patient care activities as needed. Passes instruments, sponges, and sutures to the surgeon. Holds retractors as needed. Maintains aseptic technique. Actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Identifies and handles specimens appropriately. Functions as a technical resource for OR staff, providing information relating to instruments and equipment.
- Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment of caring for patients and families. Provides basic patient comfort measures. When necessary, provides environmental support to expedite timely patient admission or transfer. Ensures a safe, supportive environment for staff and medical staff.
- Responds to questions from patient, families and significant other in a prompt, courteous, positive, and knowledgeable manner. Makes referrals to appropriate personnel as needed.
- Anticipates needs of the surgical team by correctly assembling needed supplies for each procedure according to physician preference card. Verifies that all equipment is functioning at the beginning of and during the case, recognizing own problem-solving limitations and seeking assistance as needed. Maintains a sterile field throughout the case by practicing aseptic techniques in accordance with standards of care and infection control guidelines.
