20-minute call back (hotel accommodations near CGH can be made for candidates living outside the 20-minute radius)

$15,000 sign on bonus available for external applicant with at least one year of experience.

POSITION PURPOSE:          

Registered Nurse First Assist work closely with the surgical patient, family members, and other health care professionals throughout the facility.  These nurses must be proficient in the fundamentals of the nursing process, possess a strong attention to detail, able to perform rapid patient assessments, maintain safety at all times, and possess the ability to intervene when necessary.  Registered Nurse First Assist are the patient advocate when patient(s) is/are unable to speak for himself/herself. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Functions as first assistant in surgical procedures.

  • Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately.

  • Assist in positioning, prepping, and draping of the surgical patient.

  • Anticipate and provide retraction to expose the operative field for the surgeon.

  • Maintain a clean surgical field for the surgeon by managing hemostasis.

  • Support and comply with policies, practice guidelines and regulations of the department of surgery and of the hospital.

  • Report equipment repair needs.

  • Assist the surgeon by approximating tissues and knot tying.

  • Assist with foley insertion/catheterization.

  • Assist with transfer of the surgical patient to and from the OR table.

  • Assist with transporting surgical patients to the OR suite pre-operatively and to the PACU/CCU postoperatively.

  • Implement aseptic technique.

  • Verify the preference cards for surgeon’s needs.

  • Promotes an environment conducive to professional practice by functioning as a role model and resource person for other patient services team members.

  • All duties to be performed only under the direct supervision of a licensed physician.

SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current IL Registered First Assist license required.

  • BLS required within 30 days of hire.

  • ACLS and PALS must be completed within first year of employment.

  • Able to work independently and take initiative to self-start as evidenced by need for minimal supervision and follow-up strongly preferred.

  • Willingness to develop a strong knowledge base of medical equipment and instruments.

Compensation Range

$39.54 - $59.32
