Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is a trusted provider of mission-enabling solutions for global security. Our Engineering and Sciences (E&S) organization pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. Our team is chartered with providing the skills, innovative technologies to develop, design, produce and sustain optimized product lines across the sector while providing a decisive advantage to the warfighter. Come be a part of our mission!
Northrop Grumman Marine Systems (Sunnyvale, CA) is presently seeking an on-site Turbine Mechanical Design Engineer Level 3 to support ongoing engineering development, manufacturing support, and sustainment efforts on existing steam turbine-based power generation machinery products used in US Navy submarines and surface ships.
What you'll get to do:
Apply your experience as a mechanical design engineer to assess challenges with our steam turbine-based products, develop design concepts, conduct 1st order analyses, trade studies and other supporting evaluations, and drive the maturation and delivery of solutions to enable NG operations to manufacture and deliver products on time-critical production programs. This will heavily rely on your initiative, creativity, and attention to detail as you apply engineering principles, design engineering skills, and industry practice in the design of assigned turbine components and subsystems.
Under general direction, actively collaborate with a highly integrated cross discipline team. You'll factor their considerations with your own as you plan and execute assigned tasks, independently driving the development of solutions and managing your work and that of other engineers who may support you to deliver designs, assessments and work products to meet technical, budget, and schedule requirements.
Conduct detail design, drawing development, design reviews, release for manufacture, and provide design engineering support to resolve issues encountered during manufacturing and factory acceptance testing.
Support continuous improvement efforts and bring to fruition improvements in designs, processes, etc., that improve cost, technical, schedule performance on our turbine generator programs.
As required, prepare technical reports and prepare and present formal technical briefings
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor of Science Degree in a Mechanical, Aerospace, or related STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline with 5 years relevant experience; or Master of Science Degree in a STEM discipline with 3 years relevant experience.
US Citizenship required.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret level security clearance.
Proficiency and experience with the application of design engineering principles and methods (i.e., design requirements derivation and application, ideation, sizing/feasibility assessments, DFx, trade space analysis, design artifact development, requirements verification, technical reviews) throughout the product lifecycle (concept /preliminary /detail /manufacturing and test /sustainment).
Proficiency and experience with the application of mechanical engineering principles and those of adjacent disciplines (e.g., structures, bearings, rotordynamics, shock/vibration, aerothermal, heat transfer, fluid flow, materials, etc.) in the rotating machinery / turbomachinery space.
Fluency in the development of 3D CADD-based designs using PTC-CREO or Siemens NX 3D-CADD tools and associated processes is required.
Fluency with the application of ANSI/ASME Y14.100 engineering drawing practices, as well as ANSI/ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards and associated tolerance analysis methods.
Ability to work onsite at Sunnyvale, CA campus at a minimum of 4 days / week.
Preferred Qualifications
Current active Secret clearance
Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
2 years experience in large rotating machinery / turbomachinery design and manufacturing
Knowledge of Design Engineering processes, procedures and work instructions required to support both management and engineering tasks
Experience in providing Engineering support on manufacturing/production programs, driving resolution of product issues encountered during manufacturing and factory acceptance testing
Experience as a Technical Lead, Project Manager, or other demonstrated leadership role related to program execution
