SUMMARY

Charlotte Water is seeking one (1) Graduate Engineering Intern to support analytical and research activities related to water and wastewater systems. This internship will last approximately three to four months (12–15 weeks) and is designed for a currently enrolled graduate student interested in applied engineering, data analysis, and geospatial work.

The intern will assist with research, data analysis, and visualization efforts that support planning and coordination across water and wastewater systems. This role offers hands-on experience working with real-world datasets, developing technical summaries, and learning how engineering analysis supports decision-making within a large utility environment.

The hourly rate for this internship is $26.00.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with research and technical analysis related to water and wastewater systems

  • Gather, organize, and review data from internal and external sources

  • Support analysis of infrastructure-related data using engineering and systems-based thinking

  • Create maps, figures, and basic visualizations using GIS or related tools

  • Help summarize findings in clear written and graphical formats

  • Document data sources, assumptions, and methods with guidance from staff

  • Communicate results with engineering and planning team members

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Must be CURRENTLY enrolled in an accredited Graduate Program leading toward a Master’s degree in Engineering or directly related discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate-level coursework in engineering, hydrology, environmental science, or a related field

  • Interest or experience in research, data analysis, or applied technical work

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

    • Familiarity with GIS software or spatial data concepts (coursework acceptable)

    • Strong written communication and basic data visualization skills

    • Ability to work independently while receiving direction and feedback

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.     Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
