The Cert Pharmacy Tech II aids pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care services to patients by assisting in the preparation, dispensing, record keeping, and transporting of medications for all patients including the following age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescence, adult, and geriatric.

Under minimal supervision, the Cert Pharmacy Tech II performs the required duties of a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) II at a high level of proficiency, demonstrating exemplary work behaviors and ownership for the success of the work area.

The CPhT II is tasked with all of the independent actions required of the CPhT I, in addition to increased responsibilities of medication coordination, compounding, and packaging.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR valid ExCPT certification provided by the National Health Career Association
Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy
By virtue of societal trust and security explicitly imparted to pharmacies for the control of drugs, candidate/incumbent must have a clean criminal record (i.e. no felony conviction; no drug or pharmacy related convictions, including misdemeanors; no denial, suspension, revocation, or restriction of registration or licensure by any State Board of Pharmacy)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR valid ExCPT certification provided by the National Health Career Association
Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy

Experience REQUIRED:
One year of previous pharmacy practice experience

Experience PREFERRED:
Two years previous pharmacy practice experience in a similar setting
One year of medication compounding experience, sterile and/or non-sterile
Previous experience using a standard keyboard and typing speed of 20-30 words per minute

Education/training REQUIRED:
High school diploma or equivalent

Education/training PREFERRED:
Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) Certification, and/or
PTCB Assessment-Based Certificate Programs:
Technician Product Verification (TPV),
Hazardous Drug Management, and/or
Billing and Reimbursement

Independent action(s) required:
Demonstrate competency in CPhT I responsibilities
Maintain medications and supplies used for compounding purposes
Compound various medication formulations
Understand and practice compounding according to United States Pharmacopeia requirements on non-sterile, sterile, and hazardous preparations
Repackage bulk medications into a unit-dosed form, including patient-specific doses
Acclimate to additional pharmacy-related technologies, supporting the packaging and compounding of medications
Provide staffing support among multiple, pharmacy service shifts/sites
Train other team members or students with regard to CPhT II shifts and skills
Perform some CPhT III shifts and responsibilities, once assessed for CPhT II mastery, and during subsequent acclimation toward CPhT III classification
Serve as the back-up to the CPhT III as the “Technician-In-Charge” during weekends

Must be available to work all shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency coverage.
