Red Hat's Platform Tools team within our Linux Engineering organization is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join us in working on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for Edge automotive Linux deployments, and specifically Red Hat In-Vehicle Operation System (RHIVOS). In this role, you will be part of a mature and highly experienced team focused on software development for compilers, language runtime libraries, and user space tools packages. You will work on building, packaging, bug fixing, and supporting all of these for RHEL and RHIVOS builds and deployments. You will also work directly with your peers and the RHIVOS team to provide specialist knowledge of the C and C++ tools and language runtime libraries. This will directly support Red Hat’s work preparing for ISO 26262 certification, an international standard governing the functional safety of electronic systems on road-vehicles.

You will join a fast-paced, talented engineering team ensuring quality and innovation in Red Hat products. Come prepared to contribute to the security and stability of strategically important components.


What you will do

  • Work with peers and other Red Hat teams and partners to provide specialist knowledge of the C and C++ tools and language runtime libraries

  • Support Red Hat’s work preparing for ISO 26262 certification

  • Participate in the broader Linux and toolchain communities upstream

  • Backport fixes to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) releases

  • Contribute new development work upstream in line with customer needs

  • Collaborate with the development, QA, product management, documentation, and product build teams, as well as the open source community

What you will bring

  • Knowledge of toolchain and language runtime internals, particularly GCC, glibc, & libstdc++

  • Familiarity with the open source development model

  • Experience in Linux tools and libraries build varieties (including native compilers and cross compilers)

  • Knowledge of version control and patch management

  • Experience with backporting upstream code to Linux distributions, tools and libraries 

  • Experience in the configuration, building, and testing of Linux tools and libraries

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills in English

The following skills will be considered a plus:

  • Experience with functional safety standards, processes, and requirements (IEC 61508, ISO 26262, ISO 21434)

  • Knowledge of prior experience with functional safety work

  • Advanced knowledge of Linux tools and libraries development

  • Advanced knowledge of of gcc, binutils, glibc, and libstdc++
