The VP, Risk Management will provide strategic and operational leadership to Banner Health’s teams responsible for enterprise risk management, claims and litigation management, risk finance including company’s insurance programs, clinical risk management, and patient relations. A Juris Doctorate and admission to at least one state bar and must gain admission to Arizona state bar through reciprocity or in house counsel provision. In-house experience in managing enterprise risk and managing portfolio of health care claims and related reserves. Insurance industry claims management experience.

This position is responsible for developing and driving the Company’s strategic risk management vision, identifying and assessing risk and overseeing the development and implementation of robust risk management strategies. This includes providing strategic and operational leadership for enterprise risk management (ERM), claims and litigation management, risk finance (including the Company’s insurance programs), clinical risk management, and patient relations.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Oversees enterprise risk management (ERM) program, including risk assessment and quantification. Develop Industry-leading risk mitigation and reduction strategies. Work collaboratively across the organization and with Company senior leadership to drive enterprise wide approach to and engagement in ERM.
2. Oversees strategic management of the Company’s liability claims, litigation portfolio and provides strategic and operational leadership and direction to ensure cost effective and successful management of liability claims, including the selection, engagement and evaluation of outside counsel. Monitors establishment and reporting of reserves.
3. Responsible for ensuring a comprehensive risk financing program, including commercial insurance and self-insurance programs across all lines of coverage, including management liability, general and professional liability, property, auto, workers compensation and managed care stop loss. Also responsible for overseeing the administration of the Company’s captive insurance company and the captive budget.
4. Responsible for Banner Health's clinical risk programs, including identification and implementation of methods to improve all aspects of clinical risk management, quality and performance, and patient safety.
5. Provides reports to the Company’s senior leadership and Board of Directors (or relevant Committee) with respect to ERM and related matters.
6. Establishes divisional long-range and annual strategic initiatives and budget, and manages operations within approved budget.
7. Supervises the development and execution of relevant policies and procedures. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.
8. Fosters collaborative relationships and inspires trust and confidence of senior leadership, team members, key stakeholders, and external partners/vendors . Effectively communicates at all levels to promote and drive success of ERM program and accomplish divisional and Company objectives. Apply critical analytical skills and reasoning in all aspects of position. Serves as a role-model for the organization’s mission, vision, values, and behaviors. Uses specialized knowledge and independent judgment to make operational, financial, and strategic decisions affecting outcomes throughout the company. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Juris Doctorate and admission to at least one state bar and must gain admission to Arizona state bar through reciprocity or in house counsel provision.
Seven to ten years management level experience within a healthcare system setting or other large multi-operational, complex corporate environment, including risk management and medical professional liability management experience, either as in-house claims professional or outside counsel. Must have demonstrated success managing portfolio of claims and driving strategic clinical and claims risk management. Deep understanding of enterprise risk management, in-house liability claims and litigation management processes and procedures, insurance industry and other related healthcare regulatory and/or litigation experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
In-house experience in managing enterprise risk and managing portfolio of health care claims and related reserves. Insurance industry claims management experience.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
