Unit Description
The STAR Center has identified its scope of care to include pre-anesthesia care; specifically
Prepare the patient for surgery/procedure by assessing and evaluating his/her physical status via a nursing assessment

By providing preoperative or pre-procedure teaching/education

To complete pre-surgical testing and registration. STAR Center patient population includes infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

The Department of Anesthesiology provides medical direction and coverage with full time attending and resident physician staff during regular business hours. A multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care is utilized in the STAR Center to assure a comprehensive pre-op evaluation is completed before anesthesia and the surgical procedure to minimize surgical/anesthesia risk.

The STAR Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:30 p.m. and is closed on holidays and weekends.

⦁PCAs are responsible for providing basic patient care under the supervision of a nurse. The duties generally include observing patients, recording vital signs, performing EKGs, drawing labs, non-sterile dressing changes, removing IVs, removing foley catheters, and reporting changes in patient conditions.



Qualifications

•Applicant has completed Patient Care Tech course and presents Certification.

Valid PCA certification through UMC (see Education Record)

Experience with lab draws and EKG’S is recommended. 

Must maintain a current BLS certification from American Heart Association
